WHy do people gain weight when they stop smoking?

why not just chew sugar free gum to keep mouth occupied instead of eating everything in site?

Nicotine is also an appetite suppressant, so they start feeling hungry again. Many people confuse hunger with thirst though, which can make it worse.

Who does this? I know when I am hungry and when I am thirsty.

They should chew nicotine gum all day. That way you get the best of both worlds... and it's only weakly correlated with mouth cancer!

I've stopped smoking several times over the years (Currently over 2 months now).
When I do not smoke, I also do not eat, as the old urge to light up after a meal is so strong!
Since I cut down severely, I lost a lot of weight, stopping altogether just makes me want to eat even less.
Was at avg. 185-195 lbs., got down to 134 before I realized it! Started eating more and am currently back up to around 150 lbs.
Heck, seems I'm never hungry!

Cigarettes are an appetite suppressant.

On a side note, I gained no weight after quitting. Maybe an initial +5 pounds or something, but it disappeared into my regular fat.
