I get pissed when people here in Louisiana complain about the cold in winter. Good god, do they not recall how awful our summers are? Months straight of 100+ degree 90% humidity weather. I dread summer.

I know! Last year in Minnesota we had a heat wave in early June (100+ degrees for a couple days, which only happens once every several years), and then people started complaining when it dipped down into the 70s a couple weeks later because it was "too cloudy"! I asked them, would you really prefer 100 degree heat over perfect 70 degree weather but it's a bit cloudy, and they said yes.
I think a lot of people don't realize how unpleasant certain weather can be until they experience it. So in summer you say you prefer the cold, and in winter you say you prefer heat. I try really hard not to do that.

We're supposed to get nailed tonight and tomorrow - that big storm coming through, plus we're supposed to have lake effect snow added on. I believe my wife mentioned that over a foot of snow was expected by the end of tomorrow. The grocery store.... was relatively empty. No one cares; just another day.
Down south, they'd have sold all of the bread and milk by yesterday with the expectation of 1" of snow coming 3 days from now.

It's the pussification of America and manipulation of the doom and gloom media.
I grew up in Tahoe in MOUNTAINS of snow during the 80's. A day missed in school or shops closed 1/2 day due to snow...BFD. Nobody really frazzled about it...more of an amusement for the day. it was what it was.
Here in N. Cali, the news does "storm alerts" on spritzes or thunder! Give me a fucking break! LMAO! 🙄

Hint, even a quater of an inch on an uncleared, unsalted, or unsanded road is enough to cause cars to slide at even low speeds.
I know my car can slide at even 5mph if the roads have snow on them. Makes it really really hard to stop, and I've had to go into emergency lanes because of it in the past.
When you can't slow down going fast does not work.

Its actually the same doom and gloom thing the news uses to sell. Conjure up some crap to terrify everyone to keep them tuning in. It used to be a boring job I guess so they decided to spice it up by constantly blowing everything out of proportion. I really don't feel like they used to do this.
In a normal year, it snows 2-3 inches probably a couple times a week at least. Its nothing, there's plow trucks and people have their tires and you deal with it. But if you turn on the weather, every day they talk it up. And if there's a 6 inch storm coming they'll talk about how nasty its going to be over and over again. A 6 inch storm isn't much of anything but a slow drive to work really. Even though our roads are poorly taken care of its a regular occurrence. And god help us if an actual blizzard is predicted. Its an all out blitz of media about the coming snow apocalypse and how we're all going to die. Even though it generally happens at least a couple times a year and its cleaned up in a day or two with main roads cleared within a few hours of the end.
Even though I know this is bullshit the bombardment still has its effect on me. I find myself becoming horribly stressed about the coming 6 inch storms. And the blizzards I start to feel like I'm going to die or something. I have to ignore all the media nightmare fuel and reconcile the predicted numbers against my actual experience. I have to remind myself that I've in fact lived through countless 6 inch storms and they were actually nothing but a mild inconvenience. And that I've lived through a ton of blizzards and even the worst ones I just stayed home and ran the snow blower a few times.
A few of my coworkers agreed with me. Many of them don't remember snow being such a big deal before but they find themselves getting worked up for no reason now. I *know* its having an effect on other people because they started cancelling school based on the forecasts. This has actually resulted in my getting to work early on predicted blizzard days because there is no school traffic and the storm didn't live up to expectations.
I'm not even sure there's much point to watching the weather report. By its nature its wrong as often as not so half the time you are literally getting worked up for nothing. Other days you'll drive into a traffic shit storm because it snowed a ton with no prediction at all. And it doesn't really matter either because there's almost no actual events that really call for a massive change in your planning behavior...and if there are you'd hear about them at the water cooler second hand or be surprised due to a missed prediction anyway.

Now there's easy access to all kinds of statistical analysis and massive amounts of data on viewer or customer habits.
Gather data, analyze, and adjust your marketing strategy.
And be sure to tune in at 11 to find out what new thing might be killing your children.

well some places you have to prepare for a storm.
We do:
1) make sure we are good on propane (at 40%now woot!)
2) make sure we have enough gas for snowblower
3) if its a bad storm make sure we have food for 3 days (i usually keep a week)
4) bring in firewood!
about once a year we get snowed in for a day or two. last year we were snowbound for 4 days. the damn drifts across the road were 5ft high and 14 ft across. a guy in a truck tried to get us out but couldn't even the city plow had issues.
we had a bad storm last night. but hell its nothing. only 6 inch's but the roads are already clear.

1/4 inch of snow tends to be worse for driving than 5".
It's all about predictability of what the contact patch will look like, and thus, how grip will be impacted. With only a little snow, you're going to have a lot of moments of varying grip levels between the four tires, where one has mostly slush, one has mostly pavement, one has half pavement and a patch of snow, etc. If you have a well-packed 5" of snow on the ground, grip is pretty consistent, and maneuverability is both predictable and evenly-reduced, meaning if you know how to drive, you'll actually drive better with fewer momentary losses of grip.
It's very hard to avoid the vehicle stepping out on you, to any degree, when all tires are riding on what are essentially different surfaces.
Very few cars have an amazing differential that can react to such variable surfaces like that, especially ones with all wheels driving the car.
Plus, cars have a low center of gravity, so such a car will always have better grip when maneuvering at speed, when compared to trucks or other vehicles with similar features.
Which is why I want a WRX. 😀
Though really, I just want to get the hell away from winter. And oppressive summers. I figure that leaves me little choices, as where the hell am I supposed to go then (besides Cali) ? 😛

our day to day lives, by and large, are relatively repetitive and monotonous. weather changes daily. people like to find things to get excited about.
