Why do people feel the need to constantly cough or clear their throats?

Women, especially, seem to feel the need to constantly cough, despite not having a cough due to cold. Clearing one's throat also appears to be a hobby for some.

I honestly can't imagine why another human finds the need to cough or clear their throat every thirty seconds.

It's annoying behaviour, particularily when you have to endure these sounds during a two and a half hour movie.

I used to work at the door in one of the clubs in Helsinki Finland, obnoxious behaviour is when someone throws up all over you or wants to fight you, someone clearing their throat is just something people do, get over it.

No, I'm observant.

My roommate's GF likes to wake super early, sit in the living room, and clear her throat several times a minute until she either stuffs her ugly face with food, or opens her yap to talk about how great she is.

I'll ask her, "Do you have a cold?"
"No. Why?"
"Well, you keep clearing your throat. I thought you had a sore throat."
"Oh."

The throat clearing stops for half an hour, while she cognizant of her behaviour.

I understand and appreciate one needing to clear their throat due to allergies, etc. However, for some coughing/clearing their throat is a habit, like biting nails.

Sometimes people have phlegm in the back of their throat which will not go away if they try to swallow. I have it happen and it feels as if there is a big lump back there. Having a clear throat is so much nicer.
