Why do people *expect* the pope to make the catholic church "modern"?

I agree. I love these liberals and homosexuals that claim to be Catholic, and that the church needs to change to support them. Maybe they need to stop arrogantly sinning and try to follow what Jesus taught instead.

Or they could do the hip thing and create another faction of christianity.

From what I have read and heard, Jesus never condemned or mentioned homosexuality.

The catholic church can not support the use of condoms as a method of helping prevent AIDS or any other disease. (The only way they might support condom use is in a marriage - but that does nothing to stop the spread of AIDS here or anywhere else, not significantly at least)

It always bugs me when people say the Catholic church's position on birth control helps the spread of AIDS. The church also has rules against premarital and extramarital sex and divorce. If people followed THOSE rules as well as the one against birth control, the spread of AIDS sexually by catholics would be limited to their spouse. These people that are spreading AIDS are such devout catholics that they refuse to use birth control, but they violate those other rules? Yeah right. They just don't want to use condoms.

He didn't support it either. Marriage is described in the New Testament as a union between a man and a woman. not between a man and a man/lesbians. Just reading the Bible and using common sense could have told you that.

They can still pass the virus to their children.

They children would probably die before they can procreate so that ends that line of transmission

They don't, thats why they elected the most anal, conservative Pope they could find.

yeah I wonder what the topic was about, since he's supposed to be the most conservative and less reformatist friendly they could choose.

Oh no, I didn't say Jesus supported it.
I said he never said anything about homosexuality.
The idea of common sense varies from person to person and often times contains no sense at all. I personally think that people need to worry more about things he did condemn. Such as adultery and divorce.

It is a sin. Jesus condemned sinning. Don't get me wrong everyone sins in many ways. But there is no reason for a group to want their particular sin to be ok by the church.

Why do catholics think its all ok, and god helped pick him out, and that it is always the best?

This is obviously NOT the case or things like the Spanish Inquisition (isn't the new pope from the same order that did this anyway?) never would have happened.

personally the only thing i feel they need to address right now is the celibacy of priests

if peter had a mother in law (matt 8:14-17; Mark 1: 29-31, Luke 4:38), then he also had a wife. i'm not quite sure how celibacy and prohibition of marriage fits with that historical truth.

right now the only people eligible for priesthood are imho, weirdos who somehow think serving God means denying their libidos. That just doesn't go along with the characters God chooses to use in the Bible.

... and they need to face the fact that mary had sex. lots of sex. that's why jesus had brothers and sisters.

And Protestant Churches were started because?....

Ever heard of the Inquisition(done by the Catholic Church), Martin Luther, and the Reformation?

Reformation and modernization are two different things. Reform is correcting the fundamental principles to match the original intention. Modernization is correcting the fundamental principles to match the current worldly views.

Simple. These people you're talking about who expect the Catholic church to change are not Catholics.

Excellent answer! Seems that people that want the most reform are those that don't practice the religion. Never understood that.

it's because the practical people like us that don't get suckered into religion are tired of all the wacky Catholics running around that need to lighten the fvck up!

I know I would never tell anybody that they were "suckered" into their faith, no matter what faith they belonged to. See, that's something our religion teaches 😉

I don't think that's necessarily true. There are a number of Catholics who feel like the Church should adjust its stance on a few issues. Most orthodox Catholics probably want the church to maintain the status quo, but as with all religions, Catholics come in many shapes and sizes.

From my great experience in this matter, the people that want the most reform are the "non-practicing" Catholics (which is a stupid term- you're either in or you're out). My neighbor is very outspoken about priests and marraige, abortion, and divorce, yet he goes to church twice a year (Christmas and Easter). I think the greatest reform in the Catholic Church should be the lazy non-practicing whiners to get off their butts and participate instead of complaining! :|

It never came up in the Gospels. The old testement states that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed for such behavior.

Yeah, haha. The New Testament doesn't ever mension Jesus teaching outright against homosexuality specifically, no. His father just friggin called down balls of fire and sh|t and completely destroyed sister cities and everyone in them because of it in the Old Testament. It must not be a sin!

People expect the pope to make the catholic church modern because they are realists who can see how ancient dogma has no place in an evolving society. Lapsed Catholic is probably a bigger demographic than many religions for a reason.

This is a complicated statement, and a valid argument. The problem is, the early church was quickly politicized, and many times popes had no choice but to follow the will of the king or whoever was ruler of the time. There was much corruption, much misinterpretation, and much abuse of power back then. People were also more barbaric and bloodthirsty at that time. The Renaissance period was seen as a turning point, where the Church started to get back to what it was founded for- to show people how to live to obtain happiness and self fulfillment. The Catholic Church is the original Christian religion, and it was founded for our own benefit. People seem to easily forget that these days, and if we forget why it was founded, we'll be doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past.

The problem is people in modern society that think by their great logic and progressive thinking they know better than God. All of what Jesus taught is just as valid now as it was two millenia ago.

My boots pop off. My feet are black. The toes crumble off with the slightest touch. The dead black tissue that was once my skin chips off in large crispy flakes. A smell of death pervades the room. Gangrenous pus drips from the ends of the stumps where my toes were. I look deep in your eyes, and shove my tongue down your throat.
