Why do people drive the same speed on a two-lane?

The one thing I hate the most during my morning commute is to be behind two cars on a two-lane highway, both going the same speed, usually five miles per hour LESS than the speed limit, and neither car speeds up to pass the other. In front of the two cars is an empty highway. Behind the two cars are a few miles of traffic!

I always wonder, as a ruleo of thumb, how much faster are you "allowed" to drive above thes speed limit on the fast lane??

10% is the "rule" up to 70 MPH. Meaning, in a 70 zone, I would feel fine doing 77-80.

You can argue against the margin of error in your speedometer at 5 miles over the speed limit so unless I feel comfortable speeding where I am that's what I usually do.

I continue to accelerate until someone gets in my way. 😉😛

they don't post a different speed limit for the 2 lanes. the limit is the same in both lanes

The left lane is the passing lane. Get the fvck out of it if you are going to go the speed limit.

i remember on i75 years ago, when cops said they were gonna reduce the speed limit and start enforcing it a lot harder (or something to this extent), a few trucks took up each lane and traveled the speed limit...the traffic jam it created was huge...the point is you need the lanes to have different speeds

I do it all the time, granted I never do it below the speed limit. Its fun watching people getting upset over the smallest of things. 😛

They are affectionately referred to as rolling road blocks. There's not much you can do about them, although once in my younger days I was behind two obnoxious old farts on the turnpike and I passed in the breakdown lane after following for a mile or so.

I've learned over time that backing off a bit will sometimes work. Although typically there's someone else in the right hand lane waiting to get by too, so, by backing off you risk them letting that person through while you get stuck behind again. On the other hand, riding their ass rarely works, along with flashing the brights, honking, rude gestures, etc.

Nowadays I'd suck it up and deal with it. IOW, I'd probably start having carmageddon day dreams to pass the time. Hoping that by ignoring them they'll get bored in their game and let people through.

What can I say, I live life in the fast lane...lol

i have a rocket launcher installed on my car. they usually pull off the passing lane as soon as they see it pop up from my roof

I honk or blink in these situations

as far as speed limiting in the left lane goes, I do what I feel comfortable with unless someone is behind me, in which case I get over. I feel that person A should ever keep someone behind them from passing (person B) while in the left lane, unless person A also happens to be stuck behind someone (person C) in which case person C needs to get the FVCK out the way!!!

I beg to differ. Rare is the occasion when someone doesen't get the fvck out of the way of a silver mustang closing on them at 20mph+ their current speed. 🙂

reason 12341234 why my mustang > my subaru

But what I want to know is, are the people doing this in the left lane self-righteous idiots? Do they think it's their responsbility to keep others from speeding during the rush hour commute? I understand the people doing the speed limit in the right lane. It's the jack-asses who pull up besides them in the left and stay there, all the while watching traffic build up in their rear-view mirror!

The left lane is a passing lane.

it is still subject to the posted speed limits. I've known people to get pulled over for goig 3mph over the posted speed limit in the "passing" lane. I call it the "passing" lane because here in Cali, people use it as a regualr lane of traffic.

I try not to be in the leftmost lane for very long; I know a personal account of someone who lost their arm in a head-on collision when an old man was driving at night going the wrong way on the freeway; the old guy thought he was in the slow lane, the dude i know was in the fast lane...

because people think they are the only ones on the roads and nothing they do will affect others. :|

This describes EVERY street in Orlando, especially the downtown area. Except for the 5 below the speed limit part, usually they are actually driving less than half the speed limit, and they take a good 15s to accelerate to 10mph after each light. That is why I bought 2 supersoakers when I was there. The first one didn't work that well because you could only hit the offending pair of cars if they are immediately in front of you. The 2nd one I got was a CPS 2000 (the one no longer sold because the water comes out at high enough pressure people were getting injured). The road-blocking vehicles will generally let you through when they see you open the door to aim before the 2 gallons per second start raining on top of them. (It's too big to fit out the window of a small car). The sight of the weapon generally gets them to move, only on 3 occasions did I actually have to fire it while driving. This cut my daily commute from 90 minutes to 25 as the pacing road-blockers are incredibly bad there. I handed the super soakers down to my sister when I moved to NY.

Also fun, on one rare occasion where the cars blocking both lanes were compact cars, I merged in-between them and gradually shifted back to the left lane until the pacer on the left got stuck in the grass median. This was on the way to work. He was still there, too incompetant to merge back into traffic when I passed by there again on the way home.
