Why do people do this?

So I am a assistant store manager at a EB games here in austin, tx and there is 1 single thing that gets under my skin while working here. (actually there are multiple things but I like to over exadurate)

Out front of my store there is a parking lot, its huge and its always empty.. next to the store there is a cingular and a post office place and down the way a wing's n thing's (good food if you have one near you, eat there)

All day people will pull up, park DIRECTLY in front of my store, get out and walk 50 feet to go into cingular.. or wings n things..

Look people, the parking lot is empty, there are 9 parking spots directly in front of the store your going into. Do you not want the dude your about to buy a phone from see you in your brand new lexus?

This is not just at my store, I actualyl caught myself doing this while I was going into a subway.. There is a open spot right in front of subway, but instead I park like 10 spots down and walk into the store.

Maybe its our form of exercise? Because god knows World of Warcraft doesnt let me have any time to exercise on my free time.

So...your rant is about "Why do people not park in front of the store they are going into?"

Mm'kay.

You must be very tired. Yes, overworked and tired.

I see EB Games doesn't require their managers to have either accurate spelling or grammar skills.

I can explain this actually.

I used to manage a Subway a long time ago, and whenever I saw someone park in front of the store, I would think "Aw crap, here comes another customer". Whereas if somebody walked in from off to the side, there was no pre-warning. So flip-flopping this, if I were to park directly in front of a store I intended to shop at, I would be wondering if the employees would think that same thing about me... "aw crap, it's a customer about to come in."

Just petty psychology, really.

Hmmm...is the lot more crowded right in front of those stores? Or does parking in front of your car provide an easier exit after they've finished their business?

If it's more crowded directly in front of the place I want to go, I'll park where it's less crowded if it allows me to not have to back out...

I'd rather park a bit away from other cars so I don't have to worry so much about door dings, so if the lot is more crowded in front of the store I'm going to and empty in front of your not-exactly-thriving business, I'll probably park there.

You guys have it almost correct. It basically stems from the fear of speaking in public. If there are a number of empty spaces directly in front of the target establishment, quite a good number of people are too shy/self-conscious to park there knowing the people inside will be watching them for a good minute or two.. judging them, thinking about them, etc.

Since I did public speaking for a living, it doesn't bother me, I always take the nearest parking spot. Even when going to Asian markets where I'm the only white guy.

This is why I do it. I also happen to like the exercise.

That's pathetic. Anyone who is going to judge me based on my car can suck my cock, I just don't want door dings and it's worth parking another 30 feet away and getting the extra exercise than park next to your embarrassing, junker heap of crap and risk the door dings :)

I usually select a parking spot based on three criteria, in descending order of value:

1) Vehicle density. Less vehicles in location, the better
2) Egress time. Parking spots that offer me the fastest route out of the lot/location
3) Proximity to destination. What I suspect is most people's first priority.

I don't think I've ever done this. I refuse, however, to drive around for any length of time looking for a close spot like so many people. If the parking lot looks full I'll take the closest spot I see. I never drive up and down looking for something closer or hoping someone pulls out. Most people waste more time doing that than if they just parked in the first open space and walked their lazy ass to the store.

Oh I know... people that do that piss me off.

One time I actually was stuck behind some bimbo in her pretentious SUV (or maybe the bimbo was pretentious, I can't be bothered for details) as she waited, in the middle of the aisle of course, for a car to back out so she could take that spot. Finally... the car leaves and she starts to pull in. But then, a car on the other side of the aisle but one spot closer to the building starts backing out, and I back up to let this car do so. The bimbo in the SUV, seeing this, suddenly backs out of her spot.. almost hits me... almost hits the other car... honks her horn... and slides into that "new" spot that was "one" space closer. I wanted to rip her head off and make her eat it for being so friggin stupid.
