Why do people complain about gas?

Its like a boring conversation starter. I cant believe how many times i've heard the following conversation.

"wow, can you believe gas prices?"
"Yeah, i know its insane, its almost 3 dollars"
"yeah, but i know a guy who lives in vegas who pays 4 dollars"
"wow"
"yeah.. ok talk to you later man"
"later"

Wtf, we know prices are high. Talking about it isn't going to change anything. Suck it up and drive on.

It's no different than
"Wow, can you believe the heat?" or "Wow, can you believe the cold?"
Talking about the weather won't change it, but people still do it all the time.

Talking about the weather is just as stupid. Or whenever people say "gosh it rained hard last night". Well no duh, the ground didn't spring a leak.
 
Weather, gas, sports, etc. Its all the same. Useless chatter to fill an otherwise silent void. Then the door is open for more meaningful discussions. Are you truely interested in how people are when you ask them "How are you?" Ususally, not and most people will answer with just one word "good". But it is a habit to get the conversation started.

It's a common thing that we (Meaning U.S. citizens) can universially bitch about and have someone else at least somewhat understand.

If you are over the age of 18, and own a car, which a very overwhelming number of people do in this country, it's an easy target to complain about and have people relate.

We all have to fill our cars with it, and we all hate it when it costs more today than it did yesterday.
