Why do people cling so dearly to their opinions?

The internet is serious business.

Only a very few of my opinions are set in stone. Black and white - no grey area.I understand the world is one big blur of grey and only rarely is there such an absolute situation as to fall into the extreme of total black or total white.

It might just be that I'm basing this observation on a vocal, vitriolic minority, but it seems like very often (and with increasing frequency) that people think you're either with them or against them. You LOVE COPS or you HATE THEM. If you don't think Bill O'Reilley is the Devil incarnate, then you obviously want to BE him.

Maybe it's the political climate, where nothing works but attacks. You can't give your opponent any credit at all, lest they be seen in any good light whatsoever.

Where did the days of rational discourse go? Feel free to rip me apart for being wishy-washy or whatever.

I, too, find it frustrating when people don't understand that it's okay to have different opinions.

SERIOUS BIDNESS!

Admitting they're wrong (or at least their opinion is) is admitting they're weak, and weak people get tossed off a cliff like in the beginning of 300 (I just saw it yesterday).

i think its lazy to frame an argument in black & white or to see a complex issue in black and white.

you don't support the war in iraq? then youre a traitor, you hate the military, blah blah blah, etc.

As Arthur Koestler once said: "You can never see the enemy's point of view." If you're not with me then you're against me.

There are those that see the world as black and white, and there are those that see in shades of gray. I'm from that select group of individuals that sees the world in color, primarily because we are on acid. It does make debates more interesting:

"I think you are incorrect in applying this principle to this incident."
"Well, I think it's silly to argue with a platypus while the walls are melting. I'm getting back on my banjo and going to Narnia. Mystical fairies!"

It's simple... more and more people have that "I'm always right until a mistake cost me money" attitude.

That being said, I'm always right.

This is part of why, though

I think every single one of those was used on me in the O'Reilly thread, but supposedly I'm the heel for not appreciating the finer points of such logic.

🙁

Dude, seriously? I mean, I wasn't making this as a callout thread, but you were one of the people I'm talking about (and only from that thread - I don't know anything else about you). If you want to have a rational discussion about why, I'm open to it.

If you want another exchange like you were having in that thread, I'm not your guy.

Umm... I was having a rational discussion about it.
