Why do people chew loud?

I once dated a girl who physically couldn't breath through her nose.. I didn't even notice her chew with her mouth open.. I guess she was pro at hiding it.

Generally, if you keep your mouth shut like you should, no one will notice you chewing.

Of course, it's kind of hard to eat crunchy breakfast cereal quietly, no matter who you are.

It's about the most annoying thing ever I believe, and it's enough to ruin an otherwise good meal for me. I have a friend that likes to take it a step further and suck on his fingers if he gets something on them, and this is often at nice restaurants.
