Why do people care so little about Wilma?

It has been less than a week since Wilma and the news pretty much moved on. I haven't gotten any sense of concern from people about this storm. Much of South Florida is still without power and many people that were unprepared are starting to run out of supplies. My mom ventured to a nearby publix and was able to obtain ice at a nearby bank parking lot. Many people she ran into at the time said this was their only source of water. Estimates for power restoration are mid to late November. Gas lines are hours long and gas is being rationed. A curfew is in effect for much of the area. Schools are cancelled. Cell phone towers are unreliable and frequently cutting out. I know people that haven't been able to get in touch with relatives in South Florida still.

While there may not be flooded streets and people begging to be rescued from their rooftops, I think this constitutes a significant disaster. Are people just bored of hearing about disasters and not concerned anymore?

the media is suffering from hurricane overload.

the coverage wanes with each sucessive occurrence. or so it would seem.

Yea, pretty much. The news goes after ratings more so than just reporting the news. Other things, such as the supreme court nominations, are now more interesting as far as they are concerned.

And frankly, Im happy I dont need to hear about it all the time. Yes, there was a hurricane, yes, it sucks to be you, but I would like to see something else on TV for a change.

because she was smart and plain.

i think it's just that the media is all hurricaned out 🙁

my parents are also without power, unfortunately. we didn't have damage to our house, thankfully, but there was damage to the fence and the shed outside our house. all the neighbors' screens protecting their porches/pools were all destroyed in the disaster too. my dad thankfully has accumulated a lot of water bottles over the years (my mom drinks zephryhills religiously) but i imagine that he'll run out. my mom is "stranded" (voluntarily) in ny right now and my sister is as well; she refuses to fly into FLL under the circumstances.

my sister's school website displays: "For school opening next week, please check back on Sunday."

where's your mom?

My parents are in Hollywood. They had escaped to Jacksonville for the weekend to get a generator and some gas but unfortunately my dad's office power came back on and they had to leave after only a day's respite. His work plans include figuring out how to wire things into the generator and charging his cell phone. Her daily plans include waiting in lines for gas and trying to get bags of ice so the food supplies they still have don't rot.

No offense but it was a catagory 3/2 when it came accross Florida. Floridians deal with these things all the time. If they are not prepared for the worst it should not have to be covered extensively by the media. It came through in less than a day, whereas the same storm but stronger stayed over cancun for 2 days in the same area. It was moving at 25 MPH! Which is very quick for a hurricane.

In my opinion, if you live in the tropics, you accept the risk of hurricanes, and you have to expect them. With that risk comes responsibility. If you don't want to deal with power outtages and water shortages, then get out of florida and live with family until the storm is over. Its the same reason I had trouble feeling sorry for New Orleans residents, they had plenty of warning to leave. 3 days before that storm hit, I talked to my friends about how the city was in trouble because the average elevation was below the water level rise from the hurricane. It didn't take a genius to figure that out.

In short, I think Wilma turned out to be much less than expected. Yes, it still isn't easy, but thats why its a hurricane! Its going to have strong winds no matter if it moves through fast or slow. But if you stay, you accept the risk. Period.

Um,

What about the awful earthquake in Pakistan? Katrina/Rita/Wilma combined don't amount to the quake. Not much coverage, not many donations.

[sarcasm]donating money for Osama's cronies? no not us patriotic americans. those people dont deserve time on our 24 hour nonstop news networks[/sarcasm]

Wilma wasnt as big and Floridas local govt is much better managed and prepared than LA.

Most importantly there wasnt as large a population of poor blacks so the story just couldnt be turned into a race bait to smear Bush with.
