if you can't afford the gas you can't afford the car.

It's the same thing about people whining about gas prices.

If gas prices increase by 10 cents/gal, that's only an additional $1 per 10gal fillup.

if that's the case my next car is going to be an SUV.:p

Your father's car sounds like a F-body or Corvette, w/ a six speed transmission. 6th gear is there for no other reason except to improve the EPA figures on those cars.

no, my father has a big POS Grand Marquis, 5.0 Liter Pushrod V8 (like those used in Police Interceptors). i wouldn't even complain if he got worse mileage than me, but how in the hell can my small block V6 poorer gas mileage than his tank of a car?

Different driving styles? I can squeak over 23MPG out of my 3800 V-6, or I can get under 16MPG, it all depends on whether or not I'm in a hurry. :p

Yo,
Agree with you, funny the choices people make when it comes to spending money.

Love that Honda Accord Sedan, 30 MPG on the Highway X 17.1 gallon tank = 513 mile cruising range.

It'd be nice not have to fill up 'til you're pushin' 500 miles.

A dollar here, a dollar there... It will start add up quite a bit if you don't watch what you are doing.

Ah, like the 5.0 in my Mustang :) Although mine only gets 20mpg on the freeway, but it's supercharged and has 3.73:1 gears out back.... :)

Want to really stretch your brain?

SUV hybrid's (gas/electric) will be coming out, adding cost & complexity, but allowing 3-5 mpg better mileage. The mileage gains are minimal because they'll be essentially using the large 4 cylinder, V6's & V8's for most of the work, the aerodynamics are akin to a brick's, but the extra 3-5 mpg will be a big selling point & the vehicles will be heralded for their environmentally friendly engines.

And they will be more environmentally friendly because of the sheer volume of SUV's sold and the number of miles they'll be driven collectively, that extra 3-5 mpg & slightly reduced emissions will make a significant difference in fuel consumption & pollution generated.

I'm only getting 22mph out of my 3800. And we have to use Octane 93 gas for our supercharged engines.

Unless you take into consideration the vast amount of waste generated by the design and manufacture of new vehicles.. ;)

Here's one for you...

People who buy prius cars probably for the most part care about gas mileage. A reasonably equipped prius is $25,000. So there's one answer.

Here's another one... when you comparison shop, don't you try to compare things from a multitude of angles? For example, if you were buying a juice making machine, and you saw two models, one which takes 12 oranges to make a glass of orange juice, and one which takes 8, all other things being equal, wouldn't you take the one that requires less oranges to make juice?

Similarly, if I'm looking at two cars, and I like them about equally, gas mileage might be a consideration. Furthermore, there is certainly a point at which a vehicle goes from being "mildly inconvenient" in terms of gas mileage to "total POS / aircraft carriers get better mileage".

uh, 25,000 bucks for a car isn't that much anymore.

and you're allowed to be concerned about the environment, no matter your income.

Then why are they driving around in BMW's when they could have got a Honda Civic that gets them to the same places?

Many of them are driving Honda Civics, 4 cylinder Accords and Camrys. Most of them are driving non-luxury cars.
