doesn't seem too bad to me...

But then i've always been a fan of function over form, sounds crazy i know 😱

friends don't let friends buy station wagons

anyway, 'hatchback' is a word associated with very cheap cars, such as the geo metro and ford fiesta. and station wagons are 'your father's car' to the baby boomers, so they don't buy them. they all bought SUVs, which, of course, are nothing more than trucks with station wagon bodies.

Thats blatantly not a station wagon 😉

Never been in the back of a hatchback that has headroom. Plus then you have to move the seat and crap to let people in the back.

Ever heard of a hatchback with four doors? It's quite a common thing here...

and of course they should have more heardroom than a sedan, since the roofline doesn't need to dive until well over the back seat...

Ohh you mean a station wagon. Yeah I remember those. If so, then yeah, ugly. Even the new ones.

Noes.

Not a station wagon. Well, certainly not what we'd call a station wagon. A 4 door hatch and a station wagon DO share the same number of doors tho, but a prereq of a station wagon is an extended boot space iirc...no one would call my 323 4door hatch a station wagon (and indeed, there was a proper 323 station wagon).

um... kinda.

very few wagons have any modifications the length of the luggage area. their luggage floors look identical to their sedan counterparts (but are usually much stronger!). i think the difference in terminology comes from the roof, where a hatch has a rear door that extends forward all the way to the rear seatbacks (where the window of a sedan would normally start), and a wagon has the roof stretch behind the rear seats, followed by the rear door (which may or may not have a sloping rear window).

on some that use the same general body, i think others like the previous civic were really different, the hatch seemed a lot shorter. can't say about the current model since its coupe or sedan only.

I bought a sedan from someone who rebuilds insurance wrecks. He does a hell of a job too. The things look like new, and even smell quite decent too. It's kind of freaky though to see some of the wrecks in his lot, some complete with two shattered craters on the windshield where the previous owners' heads impacted.
He almost never has hatchbacks, thus I didn't get one.
Why not just buy elsewhere? My family knows and trusts the guy, he does good work, and his prices are very reasonable.

Love my hatch. I didn't even consider the sedan. It's a waste of a perfectly good platform IMHO.

I'm still greiving the loss of my MZ3 hatch. The MazdaSpeed3 is very tempting right now...the new house I bought needs something to fill up the third garage stall 😀

Good thread. Hatchbacks have never been accepted by the US for some reason. I suspect the Dodge Calibre may be signaling a change in attitude (seeded by the excellent Mazda 3 hatch). We'll see...but in terms of efficient packaging, the best car I ever owned was a Chevy Citation. It was a POS otherwise, but had excellent space utilization. With the rear seat folded down, I could fit everything I owned in college or two people could sleep comfortably on a road trip.

Well Americans don't need a hatch if they have land barges... Besides a good majority of Americans are overweight and will not fit comfortabily in a coupe/sedan/hatch/wagon.
As for me I don't really need the extra feet of wagon/hatch so a sedan is good.

It sort of boggles my mind when people like this OP criticize others for personal choices that are made, yet don't bother to put themselves in other people's shoes and take a moment to think why they made those choices.

Personally I don't like nearly all hatchbacks and when I am putting a lot of money into an item I damn well want to make sure it is something I like looking at. When I go car shopping I want my cake and eat it too.

I'm pointing out that hatches offer more space with exactly the same chassis/footprint...oh noies i am teh evils!

If you don't like it, i think i covered that in the OP...

Well we call this a SUV
Suburu forrester

As for why I would rather have this than this, I dont wanto to gouge my eyes out when I look at my SC. Hatchbacks are just smal minivans. I'm not at the stage of my life where I would actualy want or need that so why not drive something that looks good?

dude, you'd prefer what looks like a Soarer to a Yaris? Wow...just like the rest of the universe...i'd prefer a V8 to a poxy 4cyl as well 😉

The Suby is a station wagon. It's not a SUV...

It's an US thing I guess - here most cars are either hatchback or station wagon (or now those crossbreeds of hatch and (mini)minivan). Only big sedans are mostly sedans (E-class, 5-series up)

I wouldnt even consider a sedan - Station wagons or hatches are just so much more useful and look better.

That is part of the reason I got this! room for 6, great gas milage, safe, cheap, not common, modular and fun to drive!
