My brother-in-law bought a truck about 1 year ago for about $3,000 US. Since then, he has probably put $15,000 US into fixing it up, for, and this is a quote "for when I go offroading." I ask him, "when and why would you go offroading?", he replies "I probably won't, but my truck will look cool anyways!".

WTF! his truck does not look cool, and it was made in '91 besides. I bought my wife a 4WD, but that is because we have lots of snow here, and I feel better if I know she has better traction than a FWD car, and yes I have stressed that just because she has 4WD it's not going to help her stop faster in the snow, or corner better.

who cares? Its their car. Why buy a fast car, a big car, an SUV, a truck...any of that. Who cares if they are going to "use it" for what its meant for. Granted, if you buy a vehicle, you use it what it was made for. DRIVING. Get a clue..

my dad really did not want 4wd, but the dealer only had 4wd, so we went, sat in it, drove it, liked it.

ordered one from a seperate dealer in ohio (he worked at the place we ordered from earlier so he bought it from them because of that) they found one in PA, got to us next day. Z-71 package, gave us better towing package, and the tires look better. but it doesnt have the load leveling suspension the z-66 does.

we have taken it off roading too, beach in the outerbanks, and up in PA in my grandfathers hunting cabins.

And RWD so they suck in the snow.
My RWD 924S does not "suck" in the snow. It's actually better (on 3-season tires no less) in the snow than my old Accord ever was. And my RWD Mark VIII is just fine in the snow now that I have winter tires on it. RWD only "sucks" in the snow if the driver sucks too.

Not as far as I know. Never saw anything that would suggest that on my insurance at least.

i've heard they do, all four of our cars are 4wd.....but my rates aren't THAT high

Dude, what are you talking about?!?! How do you get to work without going to a quick drag race and then back to work using the shortest roads through the forest?

I think this thread was really supposed to be 2WD SUV vs minivan, because obviously the extra space in an suv is useful compared to a car. What's wrong with having a vehicle that you think is nice instead of buying for purely practical reasons? Any SUV is way nicer than any van.

The Explorer IS too small, that's for sure. I don't know where you got the idea that, " It's big and heavy like all SUVs." It's a toy as far as trucks go.

Personally, I'd prefer a 2WD over 4WD, because I don't want to pay for the repairs of the drive train of a 4WD vehicle.
