Why do people buy movies instead of renting them?

I agree, I never understood people with huge movie collections.

I like movies but there are very few (and they are getting more rare as I get older) that are worth watching more than once. especially if it requires me putting the damn movie in a dvd player as opposed to it just being on tv.

For 5 dollars I'd rather rent then buy, I don't want that crap in my house.
 
I wonder that too.

I have a few, but those people that have 100s of DVDs...what a waste of money.

Because they are impulsive morons, for the most part. I've made a thread like this before. Most people thought I was being an ass, but the problem is they need to rationalize the fact they have hundreds or thousands of dollars wasted on a dvd "collection" (worth nothing).

Yep. And, all we hear is "uhhhhh, I uhhh, I max out my bandwidth 24/7 downloading different versions of Linux. Yeah, that's the ticket. Yeah, I download 200 GB a month, and it's all legitimate."



I very rarely pay more than $10 for a DVD. Usually I get them in the 3 for $10 bin or similar. Great for rainy days. I usually don't plan when I'm going to watch a movie in advance, I certainly don't watch enough minutes of television a month to justify a Netflix subscription, and it's too far drive just to rent a DVD.
 
My dad used to always buy movies, but ever since I told him about Netflix several years ago he's been doing that and only buying the movies he really likes.

I use Netflix almost exclusively. My whole DVD collection is pretty small.
 
I have a decent collection, a little of over 1000, of DVD movies and TV series.

The reason I do it because I buy them on the cheap ,$10 max on movie and $15 max on series, but most are about $5 per movie and $10 or so per series. Big Lot and Wal Mart can give you pretty good prices, $5 per movie at WM and about $3/movie and $6/series.

I thought about the rent/netflix then copy but too time consuming.
 
I've got at least 100 DVDs and growing in my collection currently, I have watched and re-watched all of them at some point. I have gotten ripped off a couple of times though.

I recently bought Full Metal Jacket: "Digitally Restored and Remastered". I assumed the latter translated into widescreen. Turned out to be full-screen. :| Should've checked the back. Seriously though who watches full-screen movies anymore? Even on a 4:3 monitor the "black bars" only enhance the feeling that you're in a theater, and you get more of the picture as opposed to some cropped bullshit.

I agree completely, excepting of course movies where the OAR is 4:3. I just watched Casablanca on Blu-ray, and it was a minor shock to remember that movies didn't always used to be 16:9 or wider. But yes, with Full Metal Jacket, it's widescreen or bust.

I am fairly sure that Full Metal Jacket was shot in essentially full screen.
 
Some movies I buy because I know I'll watch it some time down the road. Vanishing Point and Gone in 60 seconds I have no regrets buying.

I'll assume you mean Raiders of the Lost Ark, since it's the only one I don't own on Blu-ray (as it's not available on BD yet).

Kubrick shot most of his films at 4:3. So I don't think you got ripped-off. I do believe FMJ is one of them.

EDIT: so a few people have mentioned this.

it looks like it was indeed shot at 4:3 (negative), but was released in the US at 1.85:1 (16:9).

....so it looks like those of us who are used to and expect the US theatrical version were all screwed in terms of the OAR.

It's a common medical term known as "Packus Ratus"

You'll find this problem associated with a lot of other items in one's own place of residence - garage, basement, attic, etc. 🙂
 
i just bought my first dvd yesterday (i'm pretty sure, i don't recall owning any other ones). It was Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog; I enjoyed watching it online so much i felt like i should buy it for only $10.
