Why do people black out license plates when posting car pics

if someone sees a nice car with a plate, they can find out where you live etc. The odds of someone seeing your car/plate online and then actually getting there to take your car are minimal (unless you drive an exotic that would make it worthwhile).

The mornic thing about it is that EVERYONE can see your plate and find your info when you drive your car. And those people are actually within the vicinity of where you live. But you get all scared that people (likely nowhere near you) on teh interweb will see it..

you cant be serious? There are also stalkers on the road as well, and its very easy to piss someone off on the road. Not only that, people on the road have a better chance of living near you, but that is obvious.

You're right about proximity, but the part about vendettas... the chances of someone getting pissed at me for all the things I've said/done on this forum over the last 4 years is greater than someone getting pissed at me for cutting them off on the road once. Not to mention all the information is collectible here over a period of time. Someone can decide that they'd like to play a practical joke on me... let's look up all of rh71's posts and see what works. You want to call this paranoia ? It's just maintaining privacy... nothing close to paranoia.

Random dude on the road is just a person you've crossed paths with at one point and would probably never think about them again. Not so on forums.

The internet is not a safe place to be giving away personal info. At your local store or charity event, sure. Put up your phone number on a job board at the library... would you do that on the Internet (especially here) without reservation ?

So how do you protect yourself from people you work with and acquaintances ??
I'm pretty sure there are plenty of those people that hate your guts so do you get to block your license plate from those people too ??

it's been stated over and over again... don't make it easy for people. Deterrent. You work[ed] as a manager at McD's... I'm sure you've dealt with troublesome customers... would you hand out your card with your home address or point to which car in the lot is yours ? Why make it easy for someone to mess with you ? That would just give them an extra reason to do something if so provoked.

Its because it came from car forums that heavily modified their cars and showed off every bit of it (showing the engine bay, interior, and such). So basically they are showing thiefs that if they steal this car they know everything in it so its worth it. If a theif saw a car randomly, its a hit or miss that they might have all these goodies in their cars. Now blacking out licenses on stock cars is pretty useless since no one would want it anyways.

You're not comparing apples to apples.
Names, address and phone # are not remotely the same as license plate.
License plates are visible to everyone, the others are not.

I know what you guys are saying though..."even if posting license plate have little or no effects, why bother letting others see it if you don't have to.."
But I counter that with....."I can't black out my plate toward acquaintences, people I work with which I know many of them do not like me(these people will likely do more harm to me than people on the NET.)....SO why bother blacking out my plate on the net ??
