Why do people bash SOE (Sony Online Entertainment) so much?

Like I said, the cheesy games. AO is doing so badly they let you download the client free & play free for a full year. I gave it a shot but I can see why it's not very popular... played a few times and uninstalled.

Look at Planetside and you'll see why SOE sucks.

A lot of subscribers and about 2 developers total, possibly one now, other games with similar subscriber numbers are florishing with many developers. SOE takes the money and obviously buys themselves Ferraris, they earned it I guess. And then they say they need advertising because they don't make enough money for the developers.... maybe if they tried giving themselves less pocketfuls of cash they could hire more developers... but they don't have the morals for that.

I don't hate Blizzard. This thread is about SOE though, not a 'big dog'.

SOE has several MMOs that they maintain, Blizzard has 1. Like it or not, SOE is a big dog, a major player, in the MMO market. Blizzard is the newcomer, the upstart.

WoW has many times more subs than all of SOE's trainwrecks, er, I mean games, combined. Lineage 2 and FFXI are doing better than all of SOE as well, fwiw. While Sony was indeed huge in the MMORPG market, with virtually a monopoly, they threw it all away & screwed their customers for perceived short term profits. Seems to be a company goal, they do it so damn well.

Now let's ignore for a moment the fact that you ignored my stated reasoning, and focus on this: Since WoW's share of the MMOG market is several times what Sony's is, according to your logic, I should hate Blizzard. Yet I don't. It's quite the paradox, isn't it? Wrap your head around that one for a few days and get back to me. I'd like dearly to hear your logic on why I don't hate Blizzard, Square (or whoever's doing FFXI) or the purveyors of Lineage 2.

I had a big long post typed out here, but after much consideration, I'm not going to post it. Its obvious you've made up your mind. Nothing I say, or anyone else for that matter, will change your mind. Enjoy paying your 15 dollars a month a company that completely ignores you. At least SOE has listened to their community with EQ2 and released some great content.

I got treated like sh!t as a customer for $10, then $13 a month for many years by Sony, before seeing the light and quitting. And I don't play WoW. If the varying faces of EQ over the years taught us nothing else, it's that players don't know what's fun. They want everything handed to them on a silver platter, then blame developers when, after being given that, they realize it sucks.

Please, ArtVandalay, keep playing WoW. Not only will it keep you out of my hair, but it will bring the collective IQ of all other MMOs up a very small notch. 🙂

Oh yes their precious gem EQ2... they probably take all the devs from their other games and put them there, god forbid games like Planetside get a developer or art person... those 54,000 subscribers get nothing while the 278,000 of EQ2 at the same time get it all... They pay the same amount, thats definately enough subscribers to have more than 2 friggin employees for all of Planetside.... am I supposed to applaud them or something? Thieves is what they are...

My two cents.

People like to hate the big dogs.

Doesn't matter what they do, or don't do, people will hate them.

Of course this is true, it still doesn't make it so for every possible scenario, some people have valid reasons to dislike SOE. I just think they are a poorly run company that tries to take the gaming industry in the wrong direction. That's a reason people tend to hate the big dogs, they have much more potential for changing everything... or keeping it stagnant, whichever applies. When that certain big dog is constantly going in the wrong direction, they deserved to be flamed...

Some people play games to get away from the problems of life... SOE brings the problems of life to games.

😕 I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you were just very tired & missed it... Regardless, it's not surprising someone who would waste their money on a Sony product or service is unwilling to discuss something in favor of namecalling.

I wouldn't call it the future at all. Only Sony is delving into this area, and you can only push people so far. A few addicts, kids & noobs will play their advergames, but it'll just be a trickle. This is one thing most people won't stand for.

Really? I think it's something most people won't care about, and many will find "kinda cool" because it helps them relate to the in-game universe.

You realize the ads are steamed to you and take up a good amount of bandwidth. Not only that but the ad company knows how long you looked at said ad, from what angle, and its easy enough to access your name, address, phone number, e-mail address through the unscrupulous gaming company. No harm no foul?

I suppose it depends on the person. We can't know how well received it'll be in general, only guess. Since I'd hate it and wouldn't purchase a game with it, maybe I'm just biased toward believing the majority won't. Time will tell.

Well, they're only getting your name, address, phone, etc if you're agreeing to their privacy policy (or lack-there-of) during registration. Hopefully they'll allow you to opt out of sharing your info.....of course, chances are that's not any worse than what they do with your info when you register now (sell it).

There is also the chance that some games will just have static "ad-textures" and not use up your bandwidth.

Theres the chance that they will use static textures (some do), but the trend is moving toward Massive's streaming technology... Text

They are even considering using video feed commercials and those type of ads in the game too, where you walk near it and it activates... :|

Meh, I've nothing against SoE but I will definitely admit that Eq2 has probably the worst GMs and tech support around. Their answer to most petitions are now 'fill a bug report' or 'consult your fellow players for the answer'. What kind of idiotic service is that, telling me to ask other players for the answer...

That does sound lame, i have not tried contacting the GMs yet, have not had a need thus far.

You can't rate customer service if you have never had to deal with it.

The crowning gem of SOE customer service that I know of was when one of my friend's had his account hacked and all of his characters deleted.

After petitioning it, and spending a week working through various customer service reps who had no power to do anything, he ended up with the info that the server GM was on holidays so noone could help. Two weeks later the server GM came back, he eventually hooked up with him and the GM restored his characters - then suspended him for two weeks for having his account hacked.

He took it fairly well, losing access to the game for 5 weeks over a holiday period, but that kind of thing is why a lot of people *hate* SOE customer service with a burning passion.

Probably the other major reason that sony gets hated is the same reason that some people are hating blizzard - they feel that they aren't doing enough to make them happy - not enough content, not fast enought to buff their class, refuse to acknowledge how badly their class sucks compared to every other class, they PROMISED....., etc etc.

The third one I can think of is :

"Bertox inc !!"

<< Servers going down for restart in 30 seconds >>

"........."

But speaking of tech support, Blizzard just made me wait for 2 hours on hold to change my email address on the account.

They will not allow you to change it on their site.

I think SOE is a limping dog as a company. I don't blame their DEVs in the same mannor I don't blame our troops in Iraq. They are doing their jobs. The management however? Lets just say Star Wars Galaxies might not be there next year if they keep doing what they are doing.

Personnaly I like SWG. I use it as my virtual action figure collection. It allows me to play in a virtual sandbox with my toys with other SWG'kids ( having grown up in the 70's/80's.)

However, at this time I have to say that as a big SW and SWG fan I am... the best companies behind their products have to be CCP for EVE Online and Cryptic Studios for City of Villians/Heroes. SOE can bite me and I feel for their developers. Nothing they do goes unpunished whether it is the best thing since disco... it will be deconstructed and twisted into evil on the forums. I think SOE is crap, but I think they just reflect the majority of their vocal subscription base.

I definately agree there.

It feels nice to actually have companies that care about games and gamers like CCP still in existance.

SOE, EA Games, etc... they are just killing it.
