1 hour @300k/yr > 1 hour @ 50k/year

It's not worth their time if you will do it for them. I could easily change my own oil, but I would rather pay $15 for someone else to do it.

Exactly. If I'm making 300k a year, I'm not going to want to spend anytime doing something that the guy making 50K could do for me no matter how simple it is.

Also, does your company give the scientists keys for office? I know where I worked last summer we had to get i.t. to do that stuff, because they had all the cds and keys.

QFT. Don't complain about a help desk job being low pay when you can't do the job of the person that makes tons more $$$ than you but not doing a tech job.

For instance i can say Im knowledgeable enough to build my own computers, networking and everything, but just because I know it doesn't mean I have to do it when there's a whole help desk at work. in addition, when you're not given admin rights to do anything on the work computer and hacking it is a violation of the computing policies, well, that's why we have the people making 50k "fixing the issues".

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. People think it's amazing that I could build a pc, I could probobly get a complete noob to build a pc, it really isn't hard. It requires no real knowledge about computers, just what parts fit into what. Almost like putting together a puzzle, quite fun though.

yup it's enough of a hassle to be looking at everythin about computers for my relatives. a few months ago my gf told my neighbor that I'm in the IT field (when I'm more of a IS based consultant), and then that said neighbor asked me a bunch of questions about Office. well I told her to never tell anyone that ever again, tell people I'm in investment banking or something.
