Why do people ask for the markings on ram?

This is probably a dumb question. I am in the process of looking for ram and I was searching the forums and everyone asks for the markings of the ram chips. Is there a way to check the ram through the markings or something? How does this work?

The markings of ram chips tell you the manufacturer, speed, type, etc of the ram. This helps verify if that ram will work on your motherboard or at a certain setting. It also tells you if you got ripped off by someone (ie. if they advertise it as pc100 when it's actually pc66).

Here is a site that tells you how to read the markings. Each manufacturer has a different way of marking it's chips.
