Why do people ask for advice and then NOT take it???

This kid asks me what kinda video card he should get to play Morrowind (he was using some crappy integrated graphics in a HP XP2200 system). I told him if he wanted to keep it cheap, like under $100, get a 64 MB Ti4200. So he says he'll save up for it... tonight he tells me "guess what, I got a video card." So I ask what one and how much, and he says "GeForce4 MX440, $90" So I send him a link to about 8 different MX440's online for less than $60... and a link to a Ti4200 for $91 and he's cussin up a storm now that I showed him some benchmarks on AnandTech that show a MX440 getting outperformed by a Ti4200 by more than 100%. I give up...

My experience is people will ask always for technicial, hoping you will tell them what they want to hear, but will end up buying what they think is a good deal.

i know what u mean

some girl asked me which is better canon sd100 or the sony camera.

i told her the canon sd100 is way better. and i showed her links too.

She even agreed with me too.

what did she do? go buy the sony camera.

DUMBASS!!!

well if he's not knowledgeable about computers, then maybe he thought the mx440 and ti4200 are similar, as they're both Gforce 4's. Of course we know there's a huge difference but a LOT of people just look at the #'s.

As for the original question. Sometimes the advice you get sucks 🙂

People often just want justification of their own ideas. If it's not what they want to hear, they ignore it.

$90!? They're about $60 NZ now, or around $35 US. They're fine cards as long as you don't plan to do any DirectX 8 gaming. A rather imprudent purchase if he wants to play Morrowind, though.

I explained the difference between the two cards the first time he talked to me and told him not to get an MX anything... if $90-100 was too much then get a GeForce3 Ti500 or Ti200... oh well... it's his $35 mistake =)

That's my biggest pet peeve. But, I just ignore it. And if they ask for further advice, I ignore them... generally. Some folks you gotta deal with, like family... ugh.

He just wanted something right then and there..... I've done it before and regretted, but its live and learn 😛
