Why do people argue politics?

What a complete waste of time. If you aggregated all the dogmatic "ideas" promulgated by those in all the political threads on ATOT lately, you'd find not a single original idea. It's just a bunch of regurgitated dogma assimilated from the political ideologies of their school, parents, or environment.

I guess political arguments are easy for those with no original ideas. You don't actually have to think, you simply have to rebuke those who oppose your own views which you don't completely understand.

Lets argue something with merit; something that we can actually validate.

It's like religion, if people agrees with you, you get a feel good as it also affirms/reinforce your belief.

What ever happened to a bit of intellectual independence? *shrug*

It seems people would rather continue arguing politics rather than argue about why they argue..... 😕

i dont think we have ever found a topic that everyone supported. 🙂

Wouldn't life be boring if everyone agreed on everything?

I disagree. 😛

Because it feels good to show how stupid the other side is even though there is no right/wrong answer.

I agree with that. 😕

Of course, if the costs and outcome of public policy had simple metrics to go by, there might be a lot less politics.

I disagree, though you are largely correct. I contend that the worth of most of those discussions is relative to one's own open-mindedness and ability to read between the lines. A great deal can be learned from those discussion's if approached from the right poin of view.

Actually this is true. When a civil discussion accidentally breaks out here, I often learn quite a lot both from other posters and from digging around for data to support whatever position I've taken.

That's that single most idiotic thing I've read here in a while--and I've gazed upon a whole lot of YAGT's lately.

Sure, lots of dim bulbs engage in political arguments, but to proclaim that everyone who chooses to debate the relative merits or drawbacks of any particular political stance has no "original ideas" or aren't "actually" thinking smacks of someone feeling the sting of defeat. :Q

If it upsets you so to see people arguing about how they think the world should be ruled, simply don't look.

Perhaps they argue politics for the chance that an original idea might surface. If you don't have the discussion, you won't have the result. And yeah, the discussion might seem fruitless, but you won't know for sure until it's over. And if you keep hammering away at the discussion, your ignorance is in limbo.

It's been said there are no original ideas left.
But that doesn't change the fact that yours is a biased and false opinion.

As with anything, there are always exceptions. Most of the arguments put forth are derived from a foundation of complete ignorance on supporting matters. I admit that I don't read all the replies in the political threads as it becomes difficult to wade through all the diatrbial "typical liberal moron" or "typical repug" comments.

I'm not upset at all; quite the contrary. I'm simply saying that it would be nice to hear *ideas* as opposed to the regurgitation of partisan propaganda followed by a flamewar.

I love to argue against goose-steppers.....as I almost never lose. 😀

My one brother is a die-hard conservative.....and my other brother is a die-hard Liberal.

They usually avoid getting into arguements with me...because I think too independantly for them.

Oh, is that a fact?

Would you prefer I said it was an ignorant overly broad generalization?

Political debate and rhetoric is rooted in nothing less than "ideas". What kind of "ideas" are you looking for that aren't debated by liberal, conservatives, nazis, commies, or those that just don't care?

It's all ideas. Sounds like you are just looking for "new" ideas--go ahead then and start a discussion regarding an "idea" that you thought up that hasn't yet been debated in any political thread and quit whining already! Don't expect us to do your thinking for you, do it yourself!
