Why? And they're always "late" to things. I've been thinking about getting an iPod since they were Gen2, the U2 iPod comes out, I buy one, within two months, almost all my friends have em.

Fvcking vocabulary Nazis attacking me.........

because people want what everyone else has

not to mention people are so weak minded now that simple things like seeing a celebrity with or wearing something is enough cause for them to go out and get one.

You want to buy a U2 iPod and you're asking this question? You are the poster child for the flocking masses

I was waiting to buy one because my CD/MP3 player was working fine, it bit the dust, the U2 iPod came out, so I bought it, I only bought it cause I liked U2, and had tried out the 4G iPods in store and loved em. And again, I'd been eyeing the iPod since 2G

EDIT: I'm not just talking about my iPod, I'm talking about anything

Masses = gathered or tending to gather into a whole
Popular = representing or appealing to or adapted for the benefit of the people at large

It may also be that they saw how nice they are.

I didn't want a PSP untill I held one and played with it.

And in regard to the iPod, to put into perspective how stupid some of my friends are, a good 4 or 5 of them DID NOT KNOW just what the hell an MP3 player was, now they all have them, their little brothers have them, etc etc.

Except on the interweb. Here, we flock to things because they're not popular.

Damn, we're so cool...

[Edit] Except that we all flock to the same non-popular things (Firefox, import vehicles, etc.) so maybe we're not so cool after all

And its not always popular, sometimes its just whats "cool". I guarantee you 90% of the people that frequent AT wouldn't buy an LCD TV over a DLP TV, however, everybody else just looks at the wow/awesome factor of LCDs (or Plasmas) and pays more.....for less.

They flock to popular things because they're popular, and in doing so make it more popular. It's a 'people as opposed to the person' type thing, actually a lot like watching a huge flock of birds, all turning, ascending or descending at precisely the same moment... well, not entirely like birds; birds show some intelligence.

I know exactly how you feel.

My Grandpa bought a Ford truck in 1925, he had been checking them out since like 1920. Now look,80 years later, Ford is the #1 selling pick-up in the US, everyone wants to be just like my Grandpa.

Freekin' posers

This is a retarded, grade school level question.
