I don't get it. I also don't understand when people say *beep* in place of "fuck" or "shit" when they're speaking. What's the point in that? We know what you're thinking, and you're not hiding anything.

My neighbor is a "good Catholic" and doesn't swear..."Oh "S"...or "What the "F?" But never actually says the word...

I noticed much the same thing when we lived in Utah...the Mormons would often substitute a "non-offending" word in place of a cuss word...

The words are taboo, cultural norms do not have to be logical. I hate to use a "think of the children" argument, but would you feel uncomfortable hearing a 4-year old swearing like a sailor with "fuck" and "shit"?

George Washington - “The foolish and wicked practice of profane cursing and swearing is a vice so mean and low that every person of sense and character detests and despises it”

Malcolm X - "people only swear because they don't have the words to express themselves."

Luke 6:45 - "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh."

I do not curse because its a foul act that should be avoided at all cost, and I wish to set a good example for my children.

I also believe that the mouth is a reflection of the heart, foul mouth = foul heart. For the good man will bring out of mouth which is good, and the person whos heart is foul and evil, will speak foul and evil words.

I have seen parents teaching kids to do this.
Basically manners show respect and lubricate social situations.
When I hear a stranger, coworker, or teenager I automatically disrespect the speaker as ignorant, illmannered, disrespectful.
There is/was a Russian phase of insult, "ne cultura" (approx) meaning not cultured but total insult fighting words. It FITS.
Listening to someone using f***, d***, sh**, p***, in public, in conversation or on the phone, every third word convinces me I do not want to know them, engenders contempt (how could I pay attention to a so called boss that was so distracted he couldn't keep to the subject at hand?).
Perhaps Its my generation, I remember the Free Speech Movement (Filthy Speech Movement) and Lenny Bruce.
Sixty years ago you could do jail time for such language, which is crazy, OTOH listening to this f****** sh** everywhere all the time, streets, buses, waiting rooms, among people of all ages is pure bat guano.
Be CREATIVE, find better ways to express yourself. Do you enjoy repetive meaningless nonsense??
At one time these words meant I'm mad, hurt, angry, screwed, or lewd.
Now they are fillers for people with too much nothing to say.
If I say "go f*** yourself" or "tie your toes together" or " mind dud"...

Luckily for them, God only listens to what you say, but doesn't know or care about what you think. :awe:

actually a lot of religious people believe it does matter what you think, i.e. you can sin by just thinking of bad stuff
Matthew 15:19 (King James Version)
For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies

The Bible actually says something specifically about damnation. It says something along the lines of only God having the authority to damn someone or something to Hell.

I see that mostly on cable tv, they will fuck up a good line with something stupid because god forbid, someone should hear the word fuck or shit on tv.

I'm sick of these monkey fighting snakes on this Monday to Friday plane instead of I've had it with these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane

Gotta love American TV. If you ever visit Paris, watch TV there and you'll see no censors.. they curse, swear and full nudity. Why? Because a 6-year old already knows all the curse words and it won't make you go blind like American censors believe who still live in 1950.

People think that words in and of themselves are bad, so they substitute for others. But, in reality, when someone replaces those words or uses "edited" versions of them (such as only saying the letter 'f' instead of "fuck"), they're still saying the same thing.

It's all about the meaning you place behind the words. If the meaning as the same, you might as well be using the "bad" version of whatever word you're using.

I know.
My statement was said with subtle irony.;)

(You know...God, the all-powerful, all-knowing entity - Hah, I'll just fool him by saying "gosh dang it, you mother huggers!" There's no way he'll ever figure out what I'm actually thinking. :awe:)

I'm sure he does it out of the purest of love, too.

Why say damn instead of dang? It's just an exclamation either way. No sense putting a lot of thought into it unless someones bugging you about it.
