Why do pacifists join the U.S. military?

Just found out that someone I know, another Air Force officer, is a pacifist. That pisses me off. How can I expect this person to "support and DEFEND the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic" when this officer has an avowed aversion to violence? It's that kind of person who claims CO status when a conflict starts, just like happened after Sept. 11th. In an all volunteer force, they should NOT be given honorable discharges.

alot of people join the army thinking there never really gonna have to fight. once they find out that they must they are afraid. i doubt there against the use of force, just themselves in harms way.

CO=Coward. They are willing to get paid, have their college paid for, etc. and as soon as the shooting starts and they might have to go in harms way, BINGO, they claim they're CO. They sicken me. And you're right, sir, no way should they get anything other than the Big Chicken Dinner. (BCD=Bad Conduct Discharge, just a little military slang)

I've met a lot of pacifists in the Army...

They receive their orders and they execute them just as good as anyone else. If they don't, then they get booted awful quick.

Though I wonder also what they'd do should I be next ot them during a firefight

CO means Concientious Objector in this thread

"uh oh"

No it's OK. I promised RedDawn I would address issues and not the person. I have edited my post to read CO=Coward as it pertains to people already employed by the military.

What? how did mormons get involved in this? Mormons ARE NOT pacifict. They believe you should fight for your country or what you believe in.

it's fine to be a pacifist or a CO to the draft, but if you voluntarily join the military and then don't want to go fight, then you should get a dishonorable discharge or AWOL or something, you can't just USE the military to get all shaped up and cash in for college and whatnot and then bail out when you are called upon to do your JOB.

I hope in that case a BCD paying the state back whatever was used for education/training purposes. Of course I guess just because the guy has pacifist beliefs doesn't mean he won't follow an order or take an assignment when given one.

Pacifists seem so...out of touch with reality. Communication is vital to all things, yeah, but there really are situations where force is needed and nothing else will substitute, all of freakin' human history points to that!

I think there is a difference between being pacifist, and refusing to fight. Someone might not agree with a war, but if they follow orders, I don't see a problem with that. Just like at work I don't always agree with what my boss wants me to do, but I still do it.

I don't know. Is Pacifism similar to Masochism?

Hey as long as is isn't me you can address anybody you want Dave:)

Things are different now. All our Soldiers are Volunteers. Nobody is there against their own will. Our Soldiers are better, brighter and more prepared as a whole, though I wouldn't deny the courage it took to go fight an enemy in a far off foriegn land after getting drafted right out of High School. Being a proffesional Soldier takes a unque individual I would think. Being a kid thrown into hell just takes some bad luck.

Yawp, that's what I was talking about...Question for the other military guys: How many Arab-Muslims have you met while in the service? I've met one (of Lebanese parents) and she converted to Buddhism in the time I knew her...

Off topic, she was a cousin of Ron Jeremy

Yeah, when we were qualifying in Basic for the Coast Guard, I remember some of the people whining, "You mean we have to shoot guns? I didn't think I'd have to shoot a gun if I joined the military!" :disgust:

BULL! When units were called up to Desert Shield/Storm there were several instances where some refused to serve.

They join the military for the benefits. It can pay for an otherwise expensive education and a good pension with preferences in other jobs afterwards.

They are leeches and the scum of the earth!

A true Pacifist would apply to the medical corp or other beneficial job in the military, but many hide behind the term. They are chickensheet worthless individuals.

Getting paid to shoot guns was always my favorite part of the Army :)

It takes some Huevos to go attend the wounded on the Front under enemy fire. I think doing that might cure anybody of their Pacifism though.

I think I've made my position here clear. I've never personally met anyone in the service who was Muslim. As far as applying to the medical corps, etc. just FYI, Navy Hospital Corpsmen have been awarded more Medals of Honor than any other group. Remember these are the guys that deploy with Marines they aren't just onboard Navy ships and stations. The bottom line here is if you aren't willing to go into combat, shoot missiles, drop bombs, etc. don't join.
