Why do other computers on the network keep Pinging me

I am on my school's network and am runnig ZoneAlarm Pro. This is probably a stupid question but why do other computers on the network keep Pinging my computer?

Is this normal? Are they just trying to make sure that I am there?

Or somebody is scanning you. Nothing to worry about.

are they actually PINGing you, or are they trying to connect on some port(s)?

I will repeat buleyb, is it a PING or is it an attempted connection(to a specific port, i.e. for a fileshare or ftp or some other crazy thing)

Zone Alarm states the IP address and then states that this address is trying to "PING", it never mentions ports.

Yep I'd bet its another infected computer, my firewall logs are full of them lately thanks to the latest batch of viruses.
