Why do older people have no ability to determine if something is computer animated?

My Mother-in Law just sent me an email about some amazing footage and the moment I opened it I knew it was computer generated.

I searched Snopes.com and sure enough it's on there with the same body of message that was in hers.

Here's the Snopes link with the video also


A few months back I was watching football with my Dad and they have that guy thats in the suite on the bottom of the screen that jumps all over the place that is clearly computer animation. My Dad and I had been watching the game for a few hours and he turns to me and says "I can't believe they have some guy in that suite doing all that crazy stuff".

That was truly a facepalm moment for me. 🙁

So what gives?

Is it safe to assume that a vast majority of the population cannot actually tell when things are fake?
 
Ha I know what you mean. A few years ago I was playing Madden and my grandfather thought it was a real game on 😀
 
That video at first was hard to tell but you could see from the balls and when the 'camera' moved. Still neat CG clip

So which is it you are assuming from your vast survey of 2 individuals, that over 55 people cannot determine CGI from reality or the "vast majority" of the population? :roll:

That's not true.

My parents and I watched many of the same movies over the years while it's become more and more common place.

Ummm, no? The instant I saw the video It was painfully obvious that it was a CGI. The pipes all have the plasticy look from the late 90's of computer images.

But, I guess it is close enough for some, I guess Crysis would really blow your mother-In-Laws mind. "Why are we watching people die, you're sick!"

My in-laws and my Mom constantly email me stuff like that and they're all over 55, with my mother in-law being over 60.

IMO, TV and movies are using TOO MUCH CGI nowadays. Some is fine, to enhance things or for "spectacular' special effects, but it seems like EVERYTHING is CGI enhanced.

That's part of the reason why movies like Take are so enjoyable to me.
