Why do my faxes fail so often? Um, I think I figured it out!

:'(

I fax from my XP computer, which has a decent PCI hardware fax modem:

USR Model 2977 PCI hardware modem

I'm using Winfax lite fax software that came with my Symantec Systemworks 2003 CD suite. I use the same phone (ATT) line I use for my phone and DSL when faxing. I always seem to be able to fax and receive, however very often I have to resend a fax many times before it succeeds in going through. Why do I get so many failures? :\ I'm trying to fax an 8 page document right now and have tried almost 10 times. It usually establishes a connection but before it can get 4 pages into the send there's corruption of some kind.

I think in trying to explain the problem here I hit on the answer. I closed my browsers (yes I had Firefox and IE open), and next time I tried to send it succeeded. I guess I should always close my browsers and anything that would use any bandwidth before trying to fax. It's an inconvenience, but I fax only once in a while (e.g. every few months), so no big deal.
