i dont know why this annoys the living shit out of me but it does. when i have a MC rider in front and they see another MC rider coming towards them in the other lane they drop their left hand and wave... wtf, i think its the dumbest thing, do i wave at every person driving a Camero just because he/she is driving a camero?? noooo

They do it because you don't know how to spell the name of your alleged car.

I saw a dude on a moped going up the road and he waved at a Harley ride next thing I saw was the Harley rider nodding his head no...it was funny as heck!

:D

I think it's fine. There is a guy on youtube who would pound out victory signs when he saw other motorcyclists in Japan. I've been looking for the video for a while, but I can't find it.

The same kind of thing happens out at the sand dunes, Glamis etc. Its very common to wave to a group coming past you in the opposite direction.

It's a comraderie between motorcyclists & a sign of respect to a fellow rider on 2 wheels.

Harley riders mostly only wave to Harleys riders. To me, waving is a nusiance. I never initiate it but I will return a wave.

I'm with olds. We'd pass one another without acknowledgement.

When people do wave at me, I wave back with both hands; palms forward, fingers up, both hands quickly side to side.

I notice that fewer and fewer riders are waving in my area.

Because you're jealous. That is usually the reason when something is annoying for no logical reason. Now if they were doing their wave and it caused one of them to lose control and crash into your vehicle, you would have a legitimate reason to be annoyed.

By the way if I met someone that drove a Camero, I might wave but would probably point and laugh. A Camaro, on the other hand...

Oh, but if anyone who does want to wave to me (or run my ass over), I'll be on the 405 northbound on Thursday morning. Gotta be at UCLA by 8...

Good luck!

I'm much more annoyed by those decibel loving bikers in high density housing areas.

That... is awesome. What bike is it?

Anyway I never noticed that bikers wave to each other until I was following a friend of mine (in my car) and a couple people waved to him. I thought it was pretty awesome. When I'm out on my road bike I always wave to other people on bicycles just because. Still want to get into motorcycling even though I just bought an awesome car for commuting to work - luckily it has a ton of miles on it and was pretty cheap :p

It is the camaraderie based on sharing the enjoyment of the experience. Having fun with the activity, seeing someone who understands, and acknowledging the common understanding of the enjoyment. It is acknowledging the fun, that is all.

...

It is saying, "Hey, I am having fun and hope you are also!".

This. Basically, I wave for about the same reason that I'll occasionally just shout "Whee-hoo!" during a particularly good ride. It's an exuberant gesture among a group of people who are all having fun.

Probably an attempt to befriend you for the fear of being knocked over by your car / truck / tank etc.

When I rode my SV I would get waves (edit: and I would wave back, of course).

But not when I was riding my scoot-scoot.

Boo.

Air cooled VW drivers do that too. Jeep drivers also, but that's been diminishing over time. The Jeep drivers today are a different breed than they used to be.

Also seen this with Camaro, Corvette, and Mustang owners. Not all of them do it though.

I am going to do it on my bike more often, now that I know it annoys some people. Thanks, OP!

I don't usually initiate waves with squids or butt pirates, though.

My GTO used to get waves from other GTO drivers, but there aren't many of that car around. I very rarely acknowledge another GTI driver. Most of them are just driving it as any other car, just a transportation device.

I've been riding for many years. Most riders are willing to stop and help when they see another rider broke down on the side of the road. How many car drivers will do the same? That is why we wave at each other.

Indeed. I was first to stop when a woman flipped her car on CA HWY-163. It was a single-car accident where she suddenly veered across all lanes and hit the median but, just because my motocycle was stopped there, about ten other bikes stopped by the time I got across the road and looked back! They obviously thought a bike was involved.
