There is a certain camaraderie that fellow motorcycle riders have just being together out in the open separate from the regular folks.

It's a brotherhood of select elite individuals who share the same life choices--good or bad.

The wave is like a self congratulatory pat on the back that they are not stupid for doing what they are doing.

When I lived in TX everybody waved, no matter what you were riding. Up here in Virginia I very rarely get a wave from a person riding a cruiser, but usually get a big wave from sport bike riders.

Skydiving has a similar system. Everyone bumps fist before exit, kind of a silent way of saying "good luck, see you on the ground."
