bose uses space age paper cone technology. they don't need high quality parts as long as all their parts were space-age at some point in history
Many of the best transducers available today use paper cones.

QFT

Nothing is WRONG with paper cones, especially if they are treated. People don't like to hear things are made out of paper but the goal of a speaker cone is to have low deflection, reduce harmonics, lightweight(most of the time) but strong.

Paper does all of these things very well.

...for about the first year of ownership...then heat, humidity, and simple wear and tear break those little fibres down, treated or untreated. And then you have MUSH...

Too bad I expect my stuff to last a lot longer than that. That is WHY kevlar, aluminum, etc. have become preffered choices for mid/bass drivers, and silk is unparalleled for tweeters. Paper cones sound good in the store...but everyone knows what they sound like

FS

I wouldn't say Kevlar, aluminum and etc. have overtaken paper yet. They each have their own set of problems. Aluminum has harmonics which are caused in the breakup nodes of the frequency response. Kevlar is heavy (comparatively) so it had a high equivalent volume = BIG BOX only.

If your speakers fall apart after a year they must have been cheap(or you're exaggerating). Vifa(one of the most well known speaker manufacturers(drivers themselves) still make most of their drivers out of treated paper, and so does Peerless(subsidiary).

Treated paper performs well, has a warm sound, is cheap, and shouldn't be susceptible to humidity if made correctly. It?s a game of tradeoff's each material has its advantage.

So no, I would not say other materials have taken over paper(although metal composites are definitely widespread). Also for unparalleled tweeters you might want to look into ribbon tweeters as they can be quite incredible when used correctly.

that and the ps3 looks like that bose cd/dvd player.

whatever happened to wooden speaker cones?I read a while back that some japanese engineer found a way to make wooden speaker cones treated with sake or something.

BOSE isnt all that bad

yes they are overpriced, and some units could be made for about $50 total. but some of their stuff is decent like the ipod docking station they made. my dad got on when in NYC, making use of the more dollars for a £ factor

apple, while built well, i wouldnt say has the best sound quality, its average. and well its just too damn fashionable. the world and his dog has one, townies, idiots, losers, slappers all of them can be seen with the white headphones. its jus bad, i feel they are bought because of the fashionable element, nothing to do at all with how good it is.

i wouldnt pay for bose becuase i know i can get better for less, i wouldnt pay for apple becuase i dont wanna be another fashion clone, and i can get something better.

Bose = Overpriced, yet crap, offer me a $1000 dollar Bose speaker system, or $100 dollar Logitech computer speakers, guess which I'd take?
Apple = Overpriced (slightly), pretty much on par with the competition, you can get a 20GB iPod (4th gen, no color, etc.) for 200'ish off buy.com, the Zen Touch is also in the low 200 range.
EDIT: But you can't say Apple doesn't have its flaws. The Color Screened iPods (photo, new iPod, U2 color, whatever the hell you want to call them) have composite video output through the headphone jack. It fvcks with the grounding in the actual headphone plug, causing a really high whine when any high frequency noises are played, especially through low impendance headphones. I wouldn't touch the new iPods with a 10ft pole until Apple fixed these flaws, and I'm still not convinced having a color screen the size of a compact flash card "for viewing pictures" is hardly a feature, its a gimmick. The nano on the other hand, only gripes I've seen are people whining about the headphone jack placement.

high quality, yes.

top of the line technology? uh... maybe if you go back 5 years in PC standards, then the current Macs could be considered "top of the line." otherwise, no.

Please don't tell me this is a link to the video these two retard hobos made bitching about having to replace a Li-Ion battery? News flash idiots, ALL RECHARGABLE BATTERIES DIE SOONER OR LATER, if you're going to whine about having to have Apple replace it sometime down the road, you should've bought another DAP, or done some more research. I knew that the iPod's battery wasn't user replaceable (well, if the user was Joe Sixpack, average AT'er probably would) when I bought it. Don't whine about a "flaw" in a product that is the nature of ALL other products just because you have to pay Apple to do something about it. Besides, it takes about 1000 charge/recharges for a Li-Ion battery to really start showing its age, even if you charge your iPod daily, you plan on having that thing for 3 years? Please.

Im not talking of wod fiber, but of actual hardwood. som RCA engineer(i think) demostrated 1 or 2 years ago, some sort of hardwood treated with sake would make it malleable enough to make a speaker cone.

hehe, incredibly accurate, just can't be used at low crossovers with woofers...their tricky...thats why everyone doesn't use them.
