why do desktop Mobos only have 2 IDE connectors, most people have 2 CD-Rom like devices and at least 1 HD, leavening only 1 open IDE, slot, which means people like me who have 5 Hard drives have to but a stupid PCI IDE card, is there some physical reason they cant put like 4 on the mobo? is it an issue with the bios or something not knowing whets going on? or do they do it to make people buy add-on cards that cost more then they should

im sitting here looking at my brand new Shuttle AN35N Ultra 400 board and it woudl make it alot easier if i didnt have to setup a PCI ICE card, preformance woudl be better also

Most people have a CD drive and a hard drive, or a CD-RW and a hard drive.

That said my motherboard has four IDE connectors.

Because a large majority of people have no use for more than two.

Some do, apparently, but there's no reason for most of them to.

Back in the day when ATA66 was introduced, my ABit BE6 board had 4 IDE headers on the mobo. 2 ATA33 and 2 ATA66. Unfortunately, my PSU could not handle 8 drives at the same time though.

my Gigabyte IEXP has 4 IDE connectors, but two of those are actually the onboard raid, which I use in ATA mode (no need to use raid) if you search around you'll find lots and lots of boards with multiple ATA connectors, but mostly SATA these days, also most onboard raid can be switched to an IDE mode, where it behaves like a normal IDE controller.

My current Soltek SL-75FRN2-RL has 3.

My old Abit KT7-RAID had 4.

Boards that have more than 2 are marketing as "RAID", but I always buy them tfor extra IDE ports. there are tons on the market.

IIRC, there was a Chaintech board with 3 connectors (or one of the boards in Anandtech's 6-way nForce2 motherboard round up, Dec 2002)

Some boards have more than 2, many have RAID, and with SATA, it's less of an issue, as there are effectively 3 on there (2 IDE channels for 4 drives, then 2 SATA ports for 2 more drives, or even 4 SATA ports)

Any motherboard with IDE RAID will have more than 2 IDE connectors. It's essentially the same thing as you using a PCI IDE card, but just integrated.

They probably only put two on there to keep costs down. If they put more, you'd probably complain about the price of the motherboard instead of the $5 for a PCI IDE controller.

Of course, if you're breaking international copyright law by installing Windows on multiple machines without having enough licenses, you'll probably bitch about having to pay for just about anything.

It's simply because there was a time not long ago when 2 ide connectors was more than enough. For the majority of users, it still more than enough because all they have is 1 HD and 1 CD-rw

'Cuz all you'll ever need is 64K RAM. Oh, wait. Never mind.

I don't think any motherboard chipset natively supports more than 2 IDE channels ... even today. As has been mentioned, the reason why boards have more IDE channels is because of additional IDE controllers that have been added to the motherboard. These controllers are not in the native chipset.

You're the one trying to give out free copies of BSD. Hippy.

Anyway, if you can afford 8 hard drives and 6 CD-ROM drives, you can afford an IDE card.

In all actuality, its stupid to have that many hard drives in one case. They produce a ton of heat and take up a ton of space. Do yourself a favor and trade those drives for two large drives and move on with life.
