Why do marinas smell so bad?

I went ocean fishing on a charter boat this past weekend in Newport Beach. OMG the stench was horrible when we got to the docks. I had to breathe through my mouth the whole time cause the stench was so bad. Once we got on the boat and moving it wasn't so bad anymore.

So what's the cause of the stench? Stagnant water?

I've never smelled anything particularly off. They have an earthy wetlands kind of smell, but I like it.

I think it tends to vary by marina. Not really sure what causes it, although I'd guess that stagnant water probably doesn't help much.

Maybe fishermen clean their catch at the marina and throw the scraps in the water around the marina.

Was it a fishy smell? Well you are around water.

How about a rotten egg smell? In areas where there is not enough oxygen areas become anerobic and these bacteria release lots of hydrogen sulfide. That definitely is pungent.

If it smelled like rotten meat you were probably downwind from a fish cleaning station.

fish scraps, maybe they pump the bathroom waste from the boats around there, maybe there is a sewer flow into the ocean type pipe nearby.

Unless they've relaxed the laws in recent years, that's illegal as hell in Kahleeforneeya. I know many of the guys on the charter boats will throw the scraps/guts into the ocean as they clean fish for the charter, and IIRC, if it's in open/deep water, it's legal, but NOT in the marinas.
