Why do many people choose not to shop at Wal-Mart?

Is it because of the lack of brand-name/designer clothes, relentless using of Chinese people, less-than-minimum wages, or what?

They have some high moral standard or some other bullshit. Or they complain about the service, or that the stores aren't clean enough, or that they don't like shopping with possible "low income people" that may be wandering the aisles (God forbid you bump into Shanikqwa and her two kids).

Personally, I walk into Wal-Mart, get what I need then leave -- just like any other store.

In my experience there are two main reasons:

1. Elitism
2. Anti-corporatism

I don't shop there often, mainly because I find it to be an unpleasant experience. The store near me always seems slightly dirty and disorganized compared with newer and cleaner Targets. That isn't the case with all Wal-Marts, but it is with my local store.

I guess I fall under reason #1.

BTW, Walmart is FTW as long as you're in and out. And it depends on your location... some have WAY too many people congesting the aisles.

The only objective reason that I will avoid Walmart for most small purchases (say under $20) is because they are a cluster*$@& to get in and out of.

From parking, to navigating within the store, to checking out and trying to leave - if I hit it at like 4:30 on a weekday or any time on the weekend it's just a disaster zone. I'll pay more for more for the convenience of getting in out quicker at another place.

Oh, and when it comes to certain types of groceries - meats, produce, specialty items they just don't have the quality or variety.

But for the normal "staple" grocery items, it's bought at Walmart because it's much cheaper.

I shop at walmart for mundane things like shampoo, razors, toothpaste, deoderant etc

Also for some foods that I can find in higher bulk than grocery store (but not costco sized)

Rarely for toys

Targets are almost always cleaner. I think they do a great job with the colors and lighting in their stores to make it appear so too. They recently renovated the Walmart here and it looks pretty damned good compared to Target now. Kmarts used to be the worst.

I've seen a lot of very cool small stores that had to shut down when Wal-mart came to town and that left a sour taste in my mouth. There is nothing I actually need from Wal-mart, so I do my shopping elsewhere and try and support local stores as much as I can.

There is a major difference between a chain retailer who specializes in a specific product or niche and a big box retailer like Wal-Mart which offers cut rate prices and quality on everything under the sun.

ill take target over it because the store is filthy, the staff are borderline retarded, and it's not that much cheaper if at all.

I do my standard shopping like this:

Farmer's Market > Trader Joe's > Fry's (Kroger) for things not available at trader joe's > target for toiletries

It's too busy. With the increased number of shoppers comes an increased number of clueless assholes that have no idea where they're going, what they are even looking for and don't care they they are blocking traffic.
I don't care what they pay ppl (they choose to work there), I don't care if they buy things from child labor camps.
I do shop there every once in a great while due to one stop shopping and good prices.
