why do man holes always have steam coming out of them

I actually saw one blow in Bethesda. Prompted me to say the F word in front of my parents for second time in my life.

New York city manhole covers steam because of the many small leaks in the steam pipes that heat the builings, some of these pipes are well over one hundred years old.

But do you know why the are round instead of other shapes?

It's rather obvious if you do. But then I wonder why sewer grates aren't round as well... I guess because they generally don't go down them.

The answer, is because it's round it can't fall in the hole based on the cover being larger than the opening. If it was a different shape (square), it could fall in if you turned it a certain way.

Sewer grates aren't hinged around here. I've seen a few that feel down from kids f-in with them.
