Why do Korean women dominate LPGA?

Perhaps the men's game with tees back further makes it a game of strength whereas the women's game with the tees further up makes strength less important.

I believe that's true. In the mens game size and strength is as asset that it difficult to overcome. The game is bomb and gouge now and there is absolutely no substitute for power. In the womens game its less about size and strength and the Asians are not giving anything away be being smaller of stature. That explains why Asian male golfers don't have the same success as the Asian women, but it doesn't explain why the Asian women are so dominant. If the playing field is even physically it's got to be something else.

Why do some Asians dominate in math and science? Because they work their asses off at it and accept nothing short of excellence. I think it's that simple. Lee Trevino said something to the effect that nobody is born with "natural touch" in golf and anyone that looks like they have it hit a million balls to get it. The Korean junior programs are extremely competitive and to make it through that the players have to work hard, hone every aspect of their games and most importantly, know how to compete. The Americans on the other hand the junior programs are not so tough and thanks to Title IX any player that can break 80 is going to get a college scholarship. There's not that killer instinct, they don't have to play often and don't have to win while the Koreans do. When you're playing for your future every week as a junior golfer you get tough or you find a new line of work. When you get rich being middle of the pack your attitude changes.

Who's the highest earning American golfer? Paula Creamer. And she is pretty terrible these days, not in the top 75 in the world. She's earned $200,000 playing this season and something like $20 million in endorsements. Why practice? She got married, doesn't work at it, stinks it up every week and they keep paying her.

So is Korean junior program more developed than other Asian countries? Even more than Japan? How come it's the Korean women and not Japanese, Singapore, Taiwan, China, etc? Japan has bigger population and they love golf there. And Japanese are viewed as hard workers.

Japan junior golf is nothing. Japan is a victim of its terrain, very very few courses and they're restricted to the uber-rich. There are a lot of "golfers" in Japan that have never set foot on a real course and you can't get tournament ready without playing tournaments. They play on driving ranges and simulators, that leaves them miles behind Korea juniors of the same age. China is not golf crazy, doesn't have a lot of courses and there's a pretty serious class system. Junior girls just don't have access to courses and instructors.

Singapore and Taiwan, no idea. I'd reckon similar to Japan, they're not golf hotspots and don't have courses for the masses. I'm seeing a lot more young female amateurs from Thailand these days. They're going to be the next South Korea.

Thanks for the explanation. I don't really follow golf but when I do occasionally catch it on TV, one of the Korean women seem to win or comes close. I read today another Korean woman, In Gee Chun won the Evian Championship and shot the lowest over 72 holes than anyone in history. The story caught my eye because of her attractive face and smile which made me click on the article.

You are probably one of the rare exceptions to a lot of rules, just from what I have seen from your posts in the past.

Women aren't conscripted to the armed forces?

That's interesting. Yes, the mandatory military service could help explain why the Korean men do so poorly compared to the Korean women. The men are losing years when other golfers in other countries are practicing every day and improving a lot. But it's doesn't explain why Korean women are so dominant. They're not conscripted, so they're on equal footing with the women of other countries and still manage to kick their asses.

The best athletes get exemptions i think so that's not the case, could just be that it's just insanely popular with only women, where's Mai72 to explain this for us.

They dominate because they train hard and make it a priority.

It's the same reason why Asian women dominate synchronized diving. Are their bodies "made" better for it than other races? No...they just train harder than the rest and take national pride in it.

Actually, yes. In sports like gymnastics and diving smaller is better. You don't see any 5'8" women with bodacious ta-tas doing well there. Smaller and svelter is a big bonus, it's easier to spin something with less mass.
