Why do Klingons in the original series look totally different that they do in TNG?

Speaking of Star Trek and evolution.... Why do Klingons in the original series look totally different that they do in TNG? Someone asked Worf that on DS9, and he simply said "It's a long story, don't ask." Anyone know the answer?

Because they couldn't afford to spend that much money on make-up in the original series.

I imagine that's the real reason, but what about the Star Trek reason.

I'm pretty sure it was explained in a TNG episode one time... Something to do with their genetics. All I remember is that it was pretty lame.

I remember some discussion about this after the original Star Trek movie came out. Something about there being two different species of Klingons.. but I think the whole premise was dropped because it was, well, just a bit lame.

I thought it had to do with an accident on the Klingon homeworld or something.
