OK, I know some of you are saying you can't compare a city with 200k, vs one with 1 million. The crime rate figures are per 100k population so I think that part is fair.

That's still not really comparing apples to apples. The more people you have, the more crime you have. But it probably isn't a linear increase. Meaning that a city with 100k people will probably have more than twice the crime of a city with 50k people. Many factors cause the crime rate to increase exponentially.

Are the rest of the morons done tripping over themselves yet? Like some have already mentioned, it is due to demographics and income. Just like every other city with low crime rates.

I actually remember this a few years ago, there was quite a stir in the papers. Also, Irvine to maintain their value charges high home ownerr associations fees. I've seen it high as 300 dollars a month. You have to interview to buy a house in some communities, etc. You have to apply to Housing association just to put up sattelite dish, etc.

yup, I had to submit sat dish mount plans for HOA approval....

"...it's a freakin' pole cemented in a bucket - completely free standing - not attached to the structure or fencing in any way shape or form!"
"you still have to fill out the forms and submit plans sir"

I was afraid to raise my voice for fear of being arrested or shipped to Santa Ana

The argument that a large city as to have more crime than a small city doesn't apply here, because crime rates are leveled per 100k people. Look at the data for Toronto for example. 5 millions in the city, yet the index is at 48, yet in Victoria, (about 500k in the city), the index is at more than 200.

I'm in Sunnyvale now too, and I'll vouch for that as well. Years ago when I used to be in the local street racing scene, we had decided to race on a certain street within the Sunnyvale city limits, and the local police were on the scene before we even got there.

sunnyvale is basically a very upscale city.

my ex-gf lives there and the place is filled with asians (chinese, for the most part, not many others, except koreans). and whites and indians. almost NONE else, literally. the place is very rich. the houses are no better than the ones here, but cost much much more because of the schools there, which have very very good reputations.

and i guess 100,000 population is considered pretty small around the general area.

Isn't Sunnyvale where Buffy is from? That would probably explain why the crime rate is low there. Home of the slayer and all.

I'm not sure about that but teri hatcher went to fremont high (the sunnyvale high school).

I'm in sunnyvale right now, most people don't lock their car doors. it's sickening.

Why is that sickening?

And when you drive in parts of Irvine you can just FEEL the pretentiousness -- it's thick. Not comfortable unless you can put up with it or are that way.

I live and work in Sunnyvale. I think the crime is low because there are lots of immigrants from India and China here who are on H1B and are affraid they will get deported if they do something. Generally they work hard and raise their kids well, so there aren't many juvenile delinquents. Also, untlil recently, the rents were so high that it priced the undersirable elements out of the area. But now the rents are dropping, and I think once the undesirables can afford to move in, and I am affraid crime will follow. Also, to give credit where it's due, the police is pretty vigilant.
I see cops pretty often, even though my trip to work is only 1 mile.
