It's kinda weird that Apple couldn't just throw in a pair of those buds for the iPad considering how cheap they may actually be. But then again, I can see that from the way they are packaging the iPad, there really is no way to fit anything else into that box.

There is a fair amount of empty space in there that they could have slipped a pair of buds into, at least as best as I can recall.

I am guessing they are simply good enough for most users. Or, they may wear different ear buds depending on what they are doing at the time.

I guess the simple answer is not everyone is an "audio enthusiest".

As opposed to???

If it's as opposed to other more expensive ear buds I'll sometimes use the ones that came in the box simply because they are lying around and I can't find my other ear phones at the time.

If it's as opposed to over the ear headphones it's because I don't like over the ear headphones. If you spend any of your day (at work) interacting with others then headphones that block noise are impractical and in my opinion reflect a little bit negatively.

When I listen to music at work it's with one ear bud in so that I can hear if someone needs to get my attention and I'm just generally engaged in what's going on around me.

It works and it's free. I am not an audiophile and my ears probably won't be able to appreciate or distinguish between various classes of audio equipments with respect to in ear products. Perhaps if I am willing to shell out $50-$150 I'd have the opportunity to hear it for myself, but alas I am not willing so....

If they modify the foam underneath, I guess. But I think that may interfere with cushioning.

Either way, it doesn't look like Apple themselves are that fond of those earbuds. I have seen them redesign those buds multiple times over.

I could have sworn they modified the holes on top of the earbuds like twice.

Also on that note, I have noticed Apple's earphones are always open-air design. That also includes the in-ear model.

We don't have anything left over to buy new earbuds with :p (a joke)

It's "good enough", I suppose, is the reason why. I've got myself an $11 pair of in-ear headphones from my local supermarket, and they're better quality than the standard Apple headphones, and they don't hurt my ears either.

I hate the built in earbuds with a passion...but not cause of audio quality. They're not great but they're usable. They hurt my ears. Literally.

But for the vast majority, it's a case of "good enough" which is why they use it. I always shake my head at the argument about how the audio in Apple devices are crap when the higher audio quality is not noticeable to the vast majority of the populace. The majority are also using heavily compressed audio like MP3's which would defeat the purpose of having a device capable of outputting higher quality audio anyways.

There's also the "free" angle. Most low end earbuds are going to be of roughly the same quality anyways. And most are not going to pay upwards of $100 for a decent pair of earbuds.

being an audio enthusiest and having been an ipod user for many years I have never used the pack-in earbuds for any long period of time. 10 years ago I used the pack-ins that came with my ipod and quickly used many other headphones and earbuds as I found the sound quality to be pretty damn bad.

So, wait... when was the last time you tried them?

After breaking several much more expensive sets working out in the gym (a heavy dumbbell or something would snag the cord on a down curl or other movement and tear the wires right out), I just started using the free pair. Surprisingly, I haven't torn up the white set, but I think much is due to the fact that all the nicer sets I had owned had cords that are wayyy longer. All that extra slack is bad in the gym. Another surprising thing I happened to notice over time is that after about 50+ hours of use, the free white ones sound much better than when they came out of the box. They don't sound $200 better, but they sound better than any of the cheapo Skull Candy type junk (at least straight out of the box) and the remote and mic on the cord is always nice.

Even with better headsets, it doesn't really matter in the gym as the loudspeakers are blaring crappy music and weights are continuously clanging. Sound quality is not discernible when there's so much outside noise going on.

About a week ago. I have around a dozen of them. Being the IT manager I deploy a lot of iphones to user and keep the extras in my drawer. The buds from 10 years ago actually sounded much better than today's version.

i noticed the same thing the one that came with my ipod video sound better than the one that came with my iphone. but to answer your question my guess is that the music they listen to does not need good headphone/earphones. even fake/factory seconds sennheiser sound better than the apple ones.

I use them because they were free and I am just listening to music. Why would I ever spend money on headphones?*

(*Yes, I realize that, to some people, perfect sound reproduction is more important than food and shelter. However, to the vast majority of people, all they want is to hear some music.)

It's a feature. Part of their new environmental program. Saves the earth from harmful plastics. :p

Isolating in-ear headphones would turn that noise down. :)

Anyway, different strokes for different folks. Debating audio quality is like debating video quality. For example, some people are quite happy with DVD quality and don't see/appreciate the improvement in Blu-Ray.

I used my freebies until the right side died, then I threw the left on into the right ear and used it that way until it died... then I bought some cheap Skullcandy's and used them until I lost them... then I bought the Skullcandy's again... Either way, some people aren't as into sound quality as you are... the free or cheap ones are good enough as long as they fit your ears properly. As for noise isolation, I only use the right one while cycling. That way I can listen for cars or other cyclists. And yes, 95% of the time I listen to music on the go is while cycling. I can only imagine that a nice pair would isolate noise even better, thus making their usage more dangerous...

Are they still made of hard plastic (no padding for the ear?). Those hurt my ears real bad. Ended up replacing them days after getting my iPod.

Mostly because they're comfy? *shrug*

Maybe I'm weird, but I found the ones that came with my iphone pretty comfy. And they look pretty.

Most people don't care about the "quality" of the sound. They just want sound. My wife listens to music through the speaker of her iPad all of the time. It drives me up the wall to hear that tiny sounding speaker. I personally don't care for the in ear type and use a good quality pair of Sony over the ear headphones. I like to hear good sound quailty if I am going to listen to music.
