It's because social networking sites like facebook/linked-in bring real life networks online. Fail at real life networking, you fail at facebook/linked-in.

2) It's all "hey look at me and all the cool things I do/say!". Total narcissism.

LOL. With your shining personality I am pretty sure that you have never been "poked" by someone.

Well here is why I hate them

1. All through high school whenever anyone had computer access they were ALWAYS on myspace, most the time they were messaging someone who was 2 chairs down from them.
2. Having more friends Regardless of if you actually know them, makes you "cool"
3. People post the most idiotic and mundane things about their life like "today I saw a cat and it made me happy"
4. The endless number of comments along the lines of "hey we had fun last night" or "that party was cool"
5. Everything is public, you have to announce everything you say and do, and others talk to you about very much in the open.
6. Pretty much I just hate how much pointless blather there is, and how everyone loves it so much

Now that being said, I do have a myspace account I use on occasion to keep track of old friends and maybe send a message back once in awhile.

And exactly what do you know about my personality smartass? And you're right, I've never been "poked" - I'm the one that does the poking and the wife seems to enjoy it, so go hump someone else's leg muttface...

Not all forum posts are inane, and I can choose what discussions to take part in. Some forum discussions are actually (I know, it's hard to believe) educational and challenge your thinking.

Most social networking is less about networking, and more about pointless stuff that people (your friends, though in reality its more like every single person who knows you or heard of you through a friend of a friend of a friend) feel like sharing with you. How much of Facebook is people actually getting to know other people better and becoming better friends, really, and not just superficial crap? I would rather spend time with my friends IRL, thank you, and if my friends need to contact me they can do so my email or phone. I wouldn't mind using a professional networking site like LinkedIn in the future, but right now I have no need for it.

I don't hate social networking sites, but I see no need for me to use them. Some people might find meaningful use for them, but for me it would be more of a distraction (don't need any more than I have already) and time waster than anything else.

It is because geeks are inherently anti social. They have close friends but no acquaintances. For anyone no longer in school those sites are pretty much used to keep in touch with acquaintances. Of course people my sisters age (18) frequently use those sites exclusively to keep in touch with folks, it'll be interesting to see if that carries forward the way using email exclusively carried forward with my generation.

Of course it could just be the aesthetics of it all. Those places breed pages that feel like they came straight out of the web circa 97 complete with terrible pictures, background, font combinations, sounds that start on page load, etc etc. Its like some geocities webring.

I'm not an internet geek and I'm not particularly fond of social networking sites. I keep in touch with the people that matter to me, I won't keep in touch with someone that doesn't matter to me just in case I need something from them in the future. When I use the internet, it's either to check my email for news or personal messages from people I know in real life. I might do some research, or for leisure listen to streaming music or video. Occasionally there's an IM chat in there with someone I know in real life.

When I was 12-13 years old, I would go online to chat with strangers. The novelty of that wore off pretty quickly. I saw that having a long list of people that I really had no connection with was ultimately pointless.

While it's true to a certain extent that anti-social people might have a tendency to hate social networking sites, that's not 100% true. Someone who is anti-social in person might actually be more inclined to use social networking as a way to compensate for their lack of social skills in person.

And does anyone else here get pressured by their friends to join Facebook?
I feel like all my friends are part of some cult that I'm not in.
They're all like "join Facebook, Steve", "how come you aren't on Facebook? Everyone is on Facebook!", "Be one with the Facebook", etc (ok, I made up that last one).
I explain my reasons for not joining and they say "ok, I get it", but then next time I see them they're saying the same stuff about Facebook.

Because its where "attention whores" gather.
Because I don't have a need to know your relationship/mood status 24/7.

I think the obvious answer is that forums are technologically better than myspace / facebook communication methods.

I'd never use forums if IRC wasn't so universally blocked.

Edit: For what it's worth, not all forums are created equally...

Except I expect to meet 0% of the forum peeps I talk to, whereas I expect to see again at least 50% of my facebook friends?

I gain ALOT more news-wise via forums...but I expect to gain alot more professionally via FB

How do you search IRC for questions and answers that may have already been addressed? How do you get such a vast wealth of information at the simple click of a mouse without having to change servers and reconnect to different rooms?

Because if I go to a myspace page, I got eye-fucked looking at their "creative custom" designed page.

Facebook is only a tad better.

Lol, I guess not. I just recently moved away from Texas where I had lived for around 16 years, so Facebook beats talking on the phone all the time to friends and family.

I do the 'ating for the anonymity. No one can ID me on the street, and since most people feel the same, a lot more topics can be touched upon.

I'd join Facebook, but I really don't care for a lot of people in my past.

that's so funny, because when people post stuff. you can "like" posts so that you can tag yourself onto it, but you can't "dislike" anything.

facebook is all about the games. fantasy hockey, baseball, texas hold'em poker that ranks you vs. your friends, top-5 favourite <x> polls, trivia, etc etc. honestly i'd like to trim my friend list down to people that actually use it / non-lurkers. but who cares. it's a passing fad, they will probably start to charge eventually and something new will pop up. meh

i'd rather be playing in the weekly hold'em tournaments than sitting on forums sometimes. internet is internet. *shrug*
