Why do they need to be so arrogant about their taste in music, and mention everytime that they only listen to music which is not played on radio and whose CDs aren't available everywhere?

OOhhhh wow, you listen to Indie rock. Please let me touch you.
To convince themselves that their taste in music doesn't really suck?

I play in an indie rock band (see sig) and I run into a lot of "Holier than thou" indie kids. I think they think that way because:
a) most music on the radio sucks, and they view themselves as smarter than the general public because they went out and found better music from the local / indie scene.
b) a lot of them like to have this special, unknown band in their back pocket that they can pull out at any time and boast about. And the fact they you've never heard of them is that much better.
c) and some of them would be arrogant with or without indie music.

Either way the attitude of the listeners should not be a reflection on the music. A lot of underground music today is amazing and I listen to my fair share of it. I don't care if a band sells out though, usually that means they would've have broken up anyway and their best stuff is behind them so they might as well make some money while they can. And these indie music listeners would be arrogent and cocky about something else if it wasn't about indie music. This is much more a reflection on the kids attitudes then on the indie music scene.

yea most recent example is liz phair. great reviews for her old albums. but for her new one she teamed up with the matrix song writers. she gets blasted severely. avril lavinge used the same song writing team and got none of the flack since she was never indi to begin with😛

the biggest thing that gets me is how many of those elitist indie fans have the mentality that its only cool if only THEY listen to the music. like its a game and you need to keep the good music only in the hands of the "true fans". heaven forbid a talented group should get popular attention and let the masses hear their music. no, if everyone likes it then its not cool anymore. if i hear a cool band, i want to spread it around and let everyone else know about it, not just keep it to myself...whats the fun in listening to great music alone?

I like to listen to music that puts something into lyrics, and doesn't just make every song a repeat of the same theme. Some of that happens to be indie, but I also listen to a lot of mainstream music. It is my view that a lot of mainstream has gone downhill in the past decade, but I don't make the distintion as to whether it is "indie" or not on deciding if I should buy it. I just listen to music I like.

That's retarded. I'd never state that I only listen to music not played on the radio just because it is. I like any music that catches my attention. But I'd have to agree that a large amount of the music played on the radio should be thrown under the category of "sh!t".
