If your screen is 16:9 (a.k.a. 1.78:1) and the movie is 2.35:1 (like The Matrix is) you will get black bars. Case closed, have a nice day.

not all WS movies are the same aspect ratio.

not all WS tvs are the same aspect ratio.

either way, the move is playing in WS mode and it is normal for it not to fit perfectly.

"Widescreen" simply means an aspect ratio greater than 1.33:1.

16:9 is the tallest (or least wide, if you want to look at it that way) of the "widescreen" ratios so "widescreen" TV's are 16:9.

Any source material greater than 1.78:1 will have black bars.

More specifically, anything which does not exactly match your TV will have black bars. If it's wider than 16:9 they'll be on the top & bottom, if it's narrower they'll be on the sides.

ah thanks for that info. I was under the impression that WS DVDs will fill up my 16:9 TV like HD breadcast does. ah well....

atleast now I know nothing's wrong with my TV or DVD player...

don't forget to tell your DVD player that you have a 16x9 TV. so many people don't do this.

Boy how things have changed. In the 80's folks used to leave their tape type set to NORMAL when using Chrome and Metal tapes and this would boost the highs right out the window...

Today they set their DVD playa's to 16:9 with a 4:3 set so they don't see bars on 16:9 movies! Makes everyone look real tall though. ;)
