Why do I run out of hot water?

Is there a timer on a water heater that only heats during a certain time? I just took a bath in completely cold water. That didn't feel good, at all.

Usually not a timer.. but someone might have used a lot of the hot water before your shower, so it was depleted.

I have my water heater connected to a switch near the breaker box.

I switch it on when I want to bathe, and off afterward. Saves $$ on the bill and guarantees a hot shower :D

I have solar heating and on cloudy days the water becomes only lukewarm. There's a manual override for the electric coil to turn on but I prefer to just take it.

If you have an electric water heater, one of the elements is probably burned out, only giving you half a tank of warm water.

...

Water heaters take the hot water at the top of the heater, because ... the heated water rises.

If the bottom element is burned out, you will only have half a tank of hot water.

is it gas?

my pilot went out the other day due to high wind, with the door to the house and the garage door both open at the same time.

wasn't nice to be blasted with cold water. needless to say, i stink that day.

also, it may have something to do with the temp setting too. if you set it on 'very hot' you'll use less of it when you shower since you'll combine it with more cold water.

Standard hot water heaters only have you control the temperature. Then any time you use hot water, it automatically replaces it with cold water and heats it up. Or if you don't use the hot water all day and it cools off, it should automatically heat it back up.

If you have NO hot water at all it sounds like something is broken or not heating. Or you had someone else use up all the hot water...
