why do i need to underclock this processor?

🙁 Aloha everyone, I built a system this weekend for a friend. Everything works fine until I change the the bus from 100 mhz to 133mhz.
When I do that the system crashes while booting up, so I guess its the hdd (which is brand new) I just dont know why. Any ideas ?

New System:
Athlon 1.4ghz @ 266 fsb
ECS K7VZA mobo
(2) 512mb sticks of Kingston 133 value ram
Windows 2k
WD 80gb hdd @ 7200
GeForce2 pro w/ 64mb
Linksys "network everywhere" NIC
Que 12x CD-RW
 
Go into your BIOS and see what multiplier the board is using, you're probably at a higher multiplier and so when you go to 133Mhz FSB you're seriously overclocking it.
 
hey all, i have the multiplier set at 10.5. so when i set it at 133mhz I'll be at 1.397 or when at 100mhz I'll be at 1050.

Some PSUs are more equal than others, so to speak... and I think your CrapUSA is less equal. Try to return it and get a good PSU, like Enermax/Antec/Sparkle of at least 350W.
 
yeah, i hate the case too, i told them to get an antec and the bring that friggin thing back for me to build in. with all of the sharp edges i'm lucky i have all of my fingers. anyway i will look into the psu but would it make that big of a difference ? even if its only supplying 300 of the 400 watts that should be semi-ok or are you thinking i'm not even getting that?:Q
 
anything else i'm missing? BIOS looks fine, i can only change the fsb on the mobo. there must be something else....
 
you psu is probably fine...

don't install anything but the RAM, hdd, and video card...(for christ sakes)

boot windows...did it crash? - if no, you're fine

if yes...try upping the voltage to 1.85v (either by mainboard or closing L7 bridges)
did it crash? if no, for some odd reason your cpu is requiring more juice than it should...u may have a defective cpu in all likelihood

if yes...put voltage to default, test cpu in another mobo @ 133mhz fsb 1.4ghz if u can...if it works, your mainboard is trash.

also, make sure your bios is loaded to fail-safe...make sure all mem. timings are according to SPD Eeprom, and have the pci divisor set properly for 133mhz fsb (1/4)
 
excellent suggestions nortexoid. i will try when i go to their house this afternoon. is there any harm in having up and running at 1.050ghz while i'm at work now? one other thing ... i noticed yesterday that the voltage on the cpu says 1.71 volts. is that normal?
 
Normal voltage for an Athlon 1.4ghz is 1.75 volts,just the fact that your power supply is only giving it 1.71 might be the problem.
