why do i have such poor cam picture quality from my new webcam?

It's all about light. No webcam is good at night with no lights on. Sit next to a window during the day or point some lamps at yourself and place them close by.

Webcams on laptops just suck in general. Super tiny sensor with crap lens and poor processing algorithms means crappy pictures. External ones are a little better because they have more room for that stuff.

Pretty much this. With lots of lighting you may improve situation but think they are just generally lower quality.
