I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 Centrino notebook, with a 1.7Ghz Pentium-M. However, in Control Panel - System it says it is 1400Mhz, and then underneath 585Mhz!

What the hell is going on? I know the Pentium-M has some advanced clock throttling technology to save power but it's plugged into the mains all the time.

Please could somebody shed some light on this for me?

the chip is clock throttling depending on usage. when you are in the desktop it will throttle down to a low speed. i have a pentium-m and it does the exact same thing, its normal.

Use SpeedswitchXP to manage the throttling. Set it to "Max Performance" on AC and use "Dynamic Switching" for battery.

I tried running a burn it utility and sure enough, as you say, it increases the clock up to 1400Mhz - but it's a 1.7 - where's the other 300Mhz gone?

hmm - just noticed that cpu-z reports a FSB of 100Mhz. Shouldn't it be 133Mhz?
