I know, sometimes it's hard to look at myself in the mirror;)

I look at it as a hobby :) Some people spend some serious $$ on ski equipment, or climbing, cause they like to do it. They could probably be off with some average stuff, but they usually get the better items. You like to drop cash on computer parts and tinker with it. Sure, you could buy the cheaper ones, but why should you?

Me? I like to have a fast rig but extremely quiet at the same time. No strange sounds coming from it (no sounds at all would be perfect :)). Got me a Q9450 fast and reasonably priced, best performing cooler (TRUE), best looking and performing case in my eyes (P182), the most silent fans (Nexus) and one of the fastest GPUs (4870). Not a big fan of nVidia (personal experience), otherwise I'd probably go with a GTX260. Do I really need all that? Not really, but it's nice to have more than enough. And I'm spending the cash I earn for something I like doing. Not to mention my old stuff goes for free to my family or for dirt cheap to my friends.

In the end everybody's happy :)

Now off to order a new fan, one of the used ones is making a strange noise once in a while (though a light bump on the case makes it go quiet again). Could I live with it? Probably. But I just love silence too much :)

This thread is killing me...

I so need an upgrade. (Be warned if you click the link in my sig, some of you may have a heart murmur.) I went cold turkey on upgrading three years ago, and am anxiously waiting to upgrade. My only debate is a cheap(ish) Q9450 vs Nehalem. :p

ROFL!

Dammit didnt someone warn us!??!?

Now all we need to do is come up with a clinical name for it and publish some papers.

Then maybe we will be able to get treatment.

But I know I wont be taking the vaccine......

what about software upgrade disorder? I am pretty heavily afflicted with that. I obsessively LOOK for newer versions of all my software to upgrade to...

You bastards have all gotten me hooked. I finished my first build ever 2 weeks ago. Have had time to play one game on it for a total of about 12 hours, and about 12 more hours of actively messing with things and dabbling in OC'ing.

I'm already looking for what my next upgrade will be, and i'm starting to hound friends and coworkers to see if they want help building a computer (so I can get more experience and learn new things)

That being said, there's a LOT of satisfaction to taking something very complex and powerful and making it hum! Do you guys all get the same sense of accomplishment after a new build that I just did?

I refresh my whole farm every 18 months or so. Not cheap for 6-8 quads.

For me the thrill is "in the chase". Gathering the parts, deciding what cpu, gpu, case, memory goes with which build and sitting down and making things happen. I remember the first time I put togther a pc and hit the power switch. When my monitor lit up, I said "it's alive" and damn near had a woody:eek:. Ever since then, the tinkering; overclocking is fun, but I still get the best thrill from just making a bunch of inanimate electronic parts come to life. I guess that's why I keep buying parts for the next 'puter to build.:D

With this all being said, I wonder what is going to happen when Nehalem arrives and seeing the results come pouring in. Arg! I am already starting to sweat and get anxiety attacks! :Q

I keep contemplating swapping my E2180 out for an E7200 but I don't game nearly enough and if I'm upgrading for any performance boost that I'd actually SEE, I should get a new video card, first.

And I know that if I get that E7200, I'll have an E2180 sitting around that I'm going to have to build a new box around. Problem is I JUST built system #2 for light office work. What am I going to do, cycle the Opteron 180 out as the MCE box and build an E2180 MCE box and then... what do I do with the Opty?

Mess. I need to stop.

Upgrading for a visible performance???? You're in the wrong forum;)

I think I've been asking myself the same exact question lately. However, unlike your situation, I got a few newbie friends who needs upgrades all the time. This became my outlet, they spent the cash, I spend the time to setup and OC their rig which works out pretty well so far. I get to build some new rig every 1/2 year or so and it's not even my money.

Its not limited to enthusiasts either. Even my older relatives that do nothing on their pc but browse and email insist on having a 24" monitor and the latest highend hardware. Most of them dont even know how to use dvd player software if their lives depended on it.

My crossfired 4850's blow away my 9800 GX2 and can be had for under $300.

The OP only has 1 4850 though.

Yeah, I think I'll get the Crossfire 4850 down the road........but of course, it may mean that I really should have a x48 board to get the best CF PCI-e 2.0 16x performance..........more upgrading excuses.

There's an easy solution! All you gotta do is start folding and bam, all that performance is used in a somewhat tangible fashion. I increased my points per day about 11 to 12 times over compared to my Athlon XP rig I had before this (2500+ mobile)... feels so good it hurts.

Nehalem will taunt me.

for some reason nehalem doesn't entice me as much as the allendale's did when they first came out
it has too much in common with the prescott, runs hot, has HT, is a early core on the newest process tech, etc.

think i'll pass on snatching that one up out the gate :)

i've found that excuses, and being picky, greedy (that's not good enough), waiting for something, indecisive, brand loyal/disloyal, can save me money sometimes

man, I blame FRYs and NEWEGG for this addiction. They need to raise the price on everything so I don't feel like buying everytime they offer crazy low prices.
They're like the liquor stores that sell tobacco and alcohol to minors and drunks.

Oh my who ordered all this stuff
Can't be me, I don't even make enough
To support this habit that is draining me
Of precious financial liquidity

Gpus, cpus, ram galore
I can't bear this spending anymore
Visa, Mastercard, Amex please
Not paying the balance brings extra fees

I think by now you can probably see
This curse has gotten the best of me
For now, I know one thing for sure
Can I have another drink, please, kind sir

LOL, I'm afflicted too. I just bought a GTX 280 but I already had a 8800GTX, I was playing The Settlers VI at the time. Now I have to play Crysis again.

Same goes for my Velociraptor, my Q9450 & my Asus Xonar. I didn't really need any of them, but I'm glad I bought them, it got the monkey off my back for a few days at least. But then eventually you start thinking about the next upgrade. I'm starting to think I need a bigger than 22" LCD.

On the up side, my Folding@Home performance is through the roof.
