I'm on the phone right now with a couple trying to help them figure out why they can't get a display when they boot their computer. That's all well and good except for the fact that I do dial-up tech support.

I'm the only one here for the rest of the night, but fortunately I don't have any other calls right now. I know I should just tell these people that I can't do anything for them, but I have this strange urge to try to help everyone that calls in.

Well, at least they are actually customers of ours. :p

I used to do the same thing.

I walked some old lady through changing her desktop resolution because the OK buttons for her TCP/IP settings were too far off the screen for her to click. Do you have any idea what it's like to walk someone who sounds like they're 80 through a right click, properties, the slider, and an OK button that's hidden by a taskbar they can't figure out how to drag out of the way.

Took me quite a while, but I got her up & running.

BTW, that urge to help will fade.

I never do that.

I don't have time to do someone elses job and I shouldn't considering that fixing LAN issues make the company money and I fix it, it's hurting the company.

I do feel bad for the customers sometimes.

i always tell myself "this job would great if it weren't for the customers".

on a sidenote, i can't believe how long some people will wait on hold. The afformentioned couple waited on hold for almost 20 minutes to ask me why there was no picture on their screen.

well it took me over an hour and beating my head on the desk for about 30 minutes. You never realize how much you value a mouse until you can't use it. I think I used the tab key more in that hour than I ever have while talking to her.

I did a housecall a few weeks ago to swap out a motherboard. When I got there the guy answered the door, let me in and then told me that he is stone blind. Fine, I can handle that if he can. He led me upstairs to his office. His computer was set up with a braille keyboard (looks nothing like the kb's we use) and the damn computer told him everything it was doing. When it was booting up, when it got to the Windows splash screen where the drivers start loading, it told him what was happening all the way to the desktop. All his programs, standard Word, IE, etc.) talked to him. He had a PCI card in the puter hooked to some other gizmo that accomplished all this. Don't ever think that blind people are helpless.
