i'm trying to get an old pb 486dx w/ 170 mb hd to run win 95, it didn't have a cd drive so i put one in. now it won't boot from the floppy it booted from b4 the cd drive. i've looked in the setup util and there are no setings for a cd . but why can't i get to a command prompt with the boot disk? tia,jer

are you sure all the cables are tight and plugged in the right way? also I dont't think windows will run on something with 170 megs...

ya the cables are all correct. that's what i don't understand. why would it affect the floppy? also i thought win95 only needed 50 meg for install. any ideas? jer

Well, what happens when you try to boot off the floppy? Does it work again if you disconnect the CD ROM?

Another thing you could do would be hook up a second HD with the 95 files on it and install from there.

First, I've tried this before on an old 486 and coudn't get win 95 to work. I finally gave up.

Second, 170mb hd isn't big enough anyway.

I think you got a bad floppy disk or drive. I mean, there are only a few possibilities here:

Drive, diskette, cable, controller.

Ahem, I think you should check your facts, I have setup Windows 95 on countless numbers of 486 computers for people who just want something to type letters and email friends with who dont care about speed and can't afford a faster computer.

Windows 95a takes up around 55mb of space with default options selected
Windows 95b takes up around 110mb of space with Internet Exploder 5.01sp2 installed

Windows 95a will run on a 386DX25 with 4Mb of RAM

Ahem

I said I have tried it and couldn't get it to work.

I think you should check your people skills.
