Why do humans like music? And why does it transcend culture?

BD2003

Lifer
What is it about music thats appealing to humans? Its just tones of sound played rhytmically or melodically. Why is that entertaining to us in any way? It has to be some sort of ingrained thing.

And why is a scary song ALWAYS a scary song? And a happy one always happy? Play the same song to different peoples, and theyll all agree on the emotional content of it.

Hell, why does it even provoke our emotions?

peoplea re putting their feelings into the music, so you react to them, just as if you were tlaking to someone who was being emotional... you dont just ignore it, you react... however that might be

Here are a few songs I link to emotions:
Theme to JAWS = Scary
Imperial March = Evil
Theme from 2001 = Learning
Raiders of the lost ark (Indiana Jones theme) = Proud
Baby elephant walk = FUN!!! 😀
A Shot In The Dark = Sneaking
Theme to Pink Panther = Cool

as you can tell, I don't listen to much classical music. These are just a few songs that poped into my head.

<< I'm not even talking about lyrics. Just music, no words. >>

and he never said anything about lyrics either. All good music is a channel for the artists emotions. You can tell if the song is sad by the way it sounds. Emotion is one of the things that trancends culture.

EDIT: Usualy good music is the exact opposite of whatever is at the top of a pop charts right now 🙂

Of course it doesn't entirely transcend culture. I still f**king hate country music. Also a guy at work sometimes plays native Indian (ie from India, not music from native americans) music and that sh*t is BAD. I mean bad, bad music. If you lived there you might like it but I hate it. Hmm what else...japanese pop music = crap. Emotions are still carried through the music though regardless of its origin.

roger that, thanks derango.

My psychology teacher said he believed that human beings like music because its rhythms remind them of their mothers heartbeat while they were in the womb. If this were true, though, I would think that all mammals would like music, and I don't think they do. My dog sure doesn't like Nickelback, that's for sure. He growls when ever he hears them on the radio.
