Since they cannot get pregnant during that time, it's a mystery.

Mallow:
Right before ovulation (the release of the egg) is when girls have a spike in estrogen which kicks their sex drive into high gear. It is to a womans benefit to be extra horny the week before ovulation and 2 days afterwards b/c that is the only time she has a chance of being pregnant.

Whoa guys, a little fact you should know. A woman can get pregnant at ANY time of the month, at ANY point in her cycle. It's just more likely to happen at some points than others. Make sure you get that down - don't figure that if you hit her at the right point in the month that you're safe.

Wow for someone so missinformed you sure thought you knew what you were talking about. I will give a brief explaination of why you are wrong, however, if you want a more indepth explaination or a copy of my physiology book, LMK :)

Ok, first of all, a woman can not get pregnant during her cycle until the graffinian follicle has ruptured and the mature egg is released. This usually occurs on the 14th day. If there is no egg I ask you how can she get pregnant? Hence a girl can not get pregnant for at lease a full 13 days of her 28 day cycle.

Secondly there is only a 24-48 hour window in which the woman can become impregnated.

Thirdly, after the corpus leuteum starts to die, meaning estrogen and progesterone are no longer being made the built up endometrium of the uterus starts to sluff off, thus starting the menstral phase of her cycle and she certainly can't get pregnant during this 5-7 day peroid (no pun intended).

Where may I ask did you learn your physiology HotChic? Also, can you back up your statements as I have?

I had sex with my boyfriend during periods?and sperm were released in me. What are the chances that I could be pregnant?

There is really no safe time to have unprotected sex. You are probably less likely to get pregnant during your menstrual period but it can happen. If pregnancy is not in your plans right now, you should always use a reliable form of birth control.

From the BBC:

Old Wives Tales

If you believe you are pregnant, you shouldn't pull the plug of a bath while actually still in the bath. Its said to dislodge the foetus as the water runs out the plughole...
Mmmm... this is the kind of rum advice that gets passed on down through the years. But is it true? Well, probably not. The suction in the plug hole isn't transferred to your innards - unless you actually sit right on top of the plug hole, fully blocking it - so this is little gem is definitely not true. What else is definitely not true?

You can't get pregnant standing up
You can't get pregnant from sex during your period
You can't get pregnant even if the man withdraws before orgasm
You can't get pregnant while losing your virginity
All of the above are simply not true. And here are some other chestnuts:

An elderly neighbour of one of our Researchers swore by aspirin as a contraceptive. She was convinced that as long as a young lady kept one firmly squeezed between her thighs, pregnancy was impossible. [Ha! - Editor]

If you want a boy it is said that you should increase your salt content up to the point that you know you are definitely pregnant. For a girl, you increase your sugar content.

If you sleep with a pink ribbon under your pillow and sleep on the right, you'll get a girl. If you sleep with a red ribbon under your pillow and sleep on the left... you'll get a boy.

Whatever you do, don't handle a Pekingese dog while you're pregnant, or the baby will look like it when it's born.

The simple answer to this is yes. If a woman has a short cycle -- typically 21 days from first day to first day -- then she is actually ovulating on day seven of her cycle (the seventh day from the first day of her period). Because some periods last that long, it is possible that a menses may be just ending when she is ovulating.

*bows to your correct information*

However, that's all that's going on on the inside. The majority of women don't have a cycle that runs so like clockwork so what *appears* to be a safe time cannot really be assumed to be safe. I didn't mean to assert that pregnancy can occur no matter what state the woman's body is in, only that in practical life it's not wise to assume you're safe.

Although, as I understand it, a woman can be ovulating at any time of the month, Mallow. There are women who have become pregnant during their periods (ask a few of my friends).

It's actually PRE-PMS that it happens and by god I LOVE that time of the month. It means I don't have to work for it and the resultant festivties are always... raucous.

Biology is cool.

A winnAr is yu0.

I know three girls who swore by the "rhythm method". (No, I never slept with any of them, and no, there's no pics.)

One has a two-year-old, one is due in November, and one has since started taking the Pill. :p

A woman can get "pregnant" at any point in her cycle. There are ectopic prgnancies, etc. which are not "normal" pregnancies but still have a probability. My wife and I practiced Rhythm method for a while with no failure, it is purportedly a "pretty" effective form of birth control, good for Catholics. ;)

However it wasnt working out for us and we reverted to condoms, much easier to keep track of.

HotChic-

I do conceed that it is nearly impossible for most women to know exactly what stage they are in, from external signs. However, I have read that very few women actually feel a tinge of pain when the follicle bursts and the egg is released, but that is by no means the majority.

I will also admit that although the likely hood of becoming pregnant is less likely during menstration, it is all together possible and can frequently happen, even if it isn't the best time to occur.

One thing I wish to clear up is from your statement of "a woman can be ovulating at any tmie of the month." When I say a woman usually ovulates on day 14 of her cycle I am speaking independently of the day of the month. A womans cycle can start of the 1st or it can start of the 14th. When I make that statement I mean the 14th day of her cycle as an individual not in reference to the day of the month. Hope that cleared up some stuff :)

I also hole heartedly agree with you that there is seemingly no true safe time to have unprotected sex, even thought logically there should be :)

The fact that I've never been baptised has already accounted for that. ;)

Actually, funny story, in HS I dated a devout and severely horny Baptist girl. She eventually broke up with me because she said I was a "heretic", who "jeopardized her relationship with God"

Looking back on it, it's one of my cherished memories.

wow look at all these responses. Thanks for the gyno lessons I learned a lot. Still it seems like nature's cruel joke that the time when we most want it is the time that we most likely won't get it. I dunno about the rest of you, but I'm a little grossed out by the idea of sleeping with a girl thats on her period.

As mallow mentioned she should be most receptive before menstration during ovulation.

But the window in normally relatively short.

I rode the red river twice... once while so drunk I didn't care, once while sober. I made the mistake of looking down while I was sober. Haven't bought a ticket on that boat since then. :Q

As long as it's mild it doesn't bother me at all. Can be messier though.
