Maybe I should try an updated version of D-Tools. Or Alcohol 120%

Won't work. I ended up installing it, making the image for it in Alcohol 120% (you can't emulate the protection scheme in it), then installed the no DVD fix. Silly, but some games had music in them and I didn't want to risk missing on it.

I don't know about anyone else, but everytime I pick up a new game, the first thing I do is to rip it in Alcohol 120%, then put the game back in the case (so I don't scratch it).

What sucks about Battlefield Vietnam is the discs can't be ripped. So my CDs are getting scratched up as my roommates and I pass them between each other (LAN).

Since when? CloneCD is not your friend but it should be.

Excellent advice! :D

Cheers flxnimprtmscl

CloneCD doesn't work. It slows on the errors and there are a few thousand. It might work, but I've never left it alone for hours.
The errors are just it reading the copy protection. 1 hour+ is normal for a copy protected CD.

Nobody is talking about piracy. I'm talking about ripping BFV to protect the CDs from scratching.

they just do it's harder to share the cd... the game has a line of code or something that every now and then checks the device for the physical media (which is the code that no cd patches get rid of)

some people are too lazy to look for this patch so it prevents a few people from pirating the cd... that's why companies put in the check for the cd... to make it harder for you and your 5 friends to use the same cd to play a game together

Far Cry's copy protection is terrible - it won't run if it detects CloneCD installed (never mind actually running), but the noCD patch fixes that.

give me a break with "I rip it with Alchohol 120% and then put the CD back in the case" - most alchohol used images are warez - the program was basically made for this purpose, and while there may be some legit users, I'd bet that 75% of pc gamers don't even know what the program is.

BF 1942 only uses a CD check cause you HAVE to play the game online anyway....

Fool. Do you have ANY idea how sensitive an optical disc IS? If discs and drives were still cartridge-based (like first-gen optical drives), then I believe that anti-piracy methods should be implemented. But discs without an outer package are delicate! It's unbelievable that companies are allowed to prevent fair-use backups. It should be illegal!

Oh BS. I've got CD's from 10 years ago that are still in perfect condition. Just because your are a lazy bastard and can't put them back in the case when you are done isn't the gaming companies fault.

If anything, I've found that CD-R's are more delicate and generate more read errors over time than retail pressed disks.

There's a lot of that going around. The lastest ( I believe) Raven Shield patch made it so the game would not run if it detected any burning software, iirc.

most games won't work online if a key generator was used to get the cd key, so there is really no point.

Bullsh!t. Total bullsh!t. It's so pervasive that it ought to be illegal to interfere with a consumer's right to have a backup using copy-protections (Instead of the DMCA, which is ASS BACKWARDS). CD or hardware keys should be the only type of copyright-protection. CD-Keys require an Internet connection so ROMs should have been developed for local-key verification instead a long time ago. Game developers should actually encourage the use of backups just as normal software vendors have always insisted that you back up your downloaded software on discs and your traditional software on duplicate media.

And for all those having trouble ripping CDs, try Daemon-Tools "Fast Dump" trick. Basically, run the game with Fastdump enabled (From your actual disc) and let SafeDisc check the disc. Then quit and dupe it. In most cases, Daemon-Tools somehow assists the drive and the read errors generate only a fraction of their typical delay. If the actual disc burned doesn't work, you may be using an unsuitable burning program or not ripping with the correct options (You have to lie to CloneCD if you live in the USA to rip/burn SafeDisc2 games correctly ;)). In many cases, you may actually have an unsuitable burner (My old HP 8100i couldn't burn ANYTHING and even needed the hacked Sony CRX100 firmware to burn 80min CD-Rs! No DAO, no subchannel burn, no nothing). Having Daemon-Tools installed makes up for having an imperfect copy and allows them to be played regardless when you have the protection emulation options enabled (Though the options should work for both emulated and actual imperfect discs).
